Default Chicken Canyon...

Hearing reports of Schoolies on poppers in the Chicken Canyon.

Anyone been out? Any truth to the rumors?

I wasn't out there but talked to buddy that was. He said there were so many boats he didn't even put the lines out. He left and went up to the AP and Monster Ledge. He went 3 for 3 on BFT footballs, Skippies and a couple Mahi. Planning to get out that way soon.

Hey Darthbaiter,

I see you keep your boat over in Edgewater. I keep mine next door in the North Hudson Yacht Club. I have the center console with the green to in the water next to the boat lift. I was out by glory hole and chicken canyon last Saturday. I trailered the boat down to Shark River and launched from there. Got out there by like 8 a.m. and trolled all morning from the glory to the chicken without a hit. I heard they were doing well on the east side of chicken canyon on the radio all morning that day. We also tried some jigging here and there, but nothing. Around 2 p.m. started to work my way back to the glory and noticed a blitz off skip jacks going on. Drove up to them and my buddy was throwing top water lures, but nothing. I then trough a 10 inch pink RonZ over them and bam had one on. Thought it was a skip jack at first, but then it realized it was hook and took off. Finally got him to the boat and landed him. It was a 53 inch Bluefin about 90 pounds. What a fight on spinning a outfit.

Topdog52, thanks for the excellent report.

That's a nice tuna regardless of the tackle, but musta been hell of a lot of fun on a spinning reel. NIce job.

How longs was the rideout of Shark River? Maybe that's what I need to do too.

Joe

A floro carbon leader on those topwaters will increase your hook ups.

Its about a 2 hour ride depending on your speed figure a 50 mile run from shark river to get to the eastern wall of the CC and about 60 to the SE corner.

Excellent, much better than riding out of Raritan bay.

Thanks...

DarthBaiter,
The ride was about 2.5 hours for me. I was in no rush to get out there since the water was a little choppy. By mid morning the sea`s flattened and by the afternoon it was like a lake. I am not running a big boat so I have to choose my days carefully. That weekend the forecast was on our side. It seems this week the weather picked up and been hearing a lot of green water that moved in. We used a ramp that must have been maybe a mile from the inlet. I can shoot you over the name if you want. On the way back about 10miles out there must have been acres of bunkers schools getting destroyed by blues. We are looking to try and set something up again when the weather looks good. If you are interested we could set something up with two boats going out there. Launching down there saves you a lot of fuel then running from were i keep my boat.

Freeporttuna- I was using 140 lb floro carbon leader from a trip that I did up in cape cod. They just seemed not to want to hit anything after. We did see some really big fish surface though. Gets your heart pumping.

I would love to buddy up when the conditions are right.

I already have plans this weekend, but after that any Fri or Sat I could do it.

Count me in. I'd love to buddy up with you also. The more the merrier. When you have a few boats out there, you could work different areas. I'm free the end of next week. Thur., Fri. 8/19 8/20

How does the floro carbon leader help? (I'm always sceptical of the different lines and there affects other than the feel to the angler...)

Birdman,
I wish i did, but did not do any Tuna fishing last year or might as well say any fishing. Last year was home renovation and wedding stuff. We bought a 3 family home which took my weekends as well as the wedding i had that we had to plan in about 7 month. The funny thing though i have another two picks of two other trips that i did which i was wearing the same shirt. Guess it`s my lucky shirt.

Also, floro carbon is a must when fishing for tuna. Not an expert, but been doing a lot of research and trying to gain an education for the past year on tuna fishing. Tuna from what i understand have excellent eye sight under water. The only thing with Floro is when you use the heavy stuff like 100 or more the line is pretty stiff. Also, you will need to crimp your knots if you go heavier then that. I have bee using 80 pound Vavaris nylon line which i very limber and a great leader to use. I use white Jerry Brown hollow core so i use a 10 foot leader to keep the lure a nice distance from the line.

Darthbaiter- I will send you a PM.

Sorry, I can't make it for this Sat, my partner has work.
I might try it on Friday, depending on the wind. Will post what I end up doing.
