Default Tuna off Montauk or BI

Hey guys, is it possible to find tuna with in 20 miles of Montauk Point? I have been to BI before (good conditions) and fished within 5 miles of Montauk in poor conditions. I'd like to stay somewhat close to the island. Are there any spots 20 or less from the point and southeastern shore of the island?

For sure. There have been fish well within 20 miles off the point in the past.

Definitely fish to be taken within 20 miles. Some of our best fishing was 17miles off the point- Tuna, Mako, Thresher.

Do I need downriggers for tuna, shark, etc?

Buy a Captain Seagulls Sportfishing map...well worth it. At the Mud Hole, you'll find some good sized BFT.

The Butterfish Hole is mentioned often and is about 20 miles SSE of the point.

you can get some fish upwards of 900 lbs. off block island. Happens every year. Mudhole, Coxes Ledge and Sharks ledge are all on the wrong side of Block island however. You may want to try the structure south of montauk to cut down some of the ride. Not really familiar with the area, but as stated above, give the Seagulls chart a try..

I have a boat in Gardiners Bay + Montauk. Give me a shout on PM if you'd ever like to take a trip out with us to get a lay of the land or just to go fishing.

My best Mako close to 300lb. , my best Mahi @ 30 lbs. and plenty Bluefin tuna to around 125 lb. have been caught within 25 miles from Montauk ,, Last year in August coming in from the flats catching those micro yellows of recent years ,, We ran into a nice school of 60-70 lb. class bluefin , at one time i saw 3 Bluefins completely out of the water , and also a small Mako and a large loggerhead sea turtle on the surface in glass calm conditions just south of the Butterfish hole (20 miles south of the point ) ,, I am a canyon guy but i miss the inshore bites,, alot of fun. when it happens ,, Mark

The Butterfish hole has been a great (close in ) spot for years. Just be warned, some of the fish can get big.
