Default Providence Boat Show

Providence Boat Show starts today through Sunday. Something to do on a winter weekend. Plus the Pats/Ravens on Sunday.

Went to the show today -- just filled one floor in the convention center. Not that long ago it filled two or three floors in the convention center plus most of the adjoining sports arena. Not many fishing boats -- a few Pursuits, Hydrasports, one Mako, a couple of Sailfish, and maybe a Seaswirl or something. There were a couple of electronics booths, several yacht broker booths, and the usual metal polish and custom T-shirt/hat booths.

Nothing terribly exciting, but still nice to get on boats and look at boating gear in the middle of a freezing afternoon with snow flurries.

Yeah, I was there tonight as well. If it took me 30 minutes to walk it I was moving slowly. Even the shamwow guy was out hitting the bar.

It was like a wake, and not an irish one. No boats bigger than 28 feet, and almost all of the outboards were singles. Probably to keep sticker prices low for the show.

I didn't buy anything, and I wasn't even tempted. Usually I have to pull myself out because I could spend a ton at these shows. But nothing there was really that appealing.

Still, the smell of curing fiberglass was refreshing.

The '09 show in Boston was already 1/3 smaller than '08, it will be interesting to see what it looks like next month.

Having it the week after the school vacation week isn't going to help either.

Went yesterday, save your money. Boats I saw were 2007 and 2008 models! Who wants to see 3 year old used boats like a North Coast that I've already seen years ago. That's my last time going, probably won't be around much longer anyway. Boston should be almost as bad.

Last year South Shore Dry Dock was giving away free tickets. You just needed to send them an email and the tickets were reserverd for you. Pretty cool with no hooks attached no pun intended

I ended up buying a boat from them this year, so it wasn't a completed wasted sawbuck for them.

Boat shows in general are certainly smaller than they were in years past. But I feel that here in the Northeast, and probably the same in other parts of the country, they serve an important service of entertainment for off-season boating enthusiasts. We're not out on the water enjoying our boats this time of year, so why not spend a day thinking about, talking about and looking at boats and the associated marine paraphernalia.

I can't say I LOVE standing in a boat show booth for ten days straight, but I certainly enjoy the opportunity to talk boats and boating in the middle of the winter.

Last year South Shore reserved 2 tix for me, I was expecting 1, so was happy to hear 2. showed up with 4 other people, i said ok you guys get your tix i have to go here to pick mine up. thinking im all slick and stuff. get to the will call window or whatever. someone picked up the tickets earlier that day and used my name. I told South Shore (Brian) what happened. I guess it happened to quite a few people. I felt for him that he got taken advantage of, more him than me. I just dont get that. if you cant afford the tickets (I mean you have to sneak in), its really not that important for you to get into the show!
