Default U.S. Coast Guard Safety Gear Regulations

So where exactly do we find the U.S. Coast Guard Safety Gear Regulations that are mentioned when applying for the NMFS HMS permits? I know they vary depending on distance offshore, size of boat, etc., but I can't seem to find the printed regs anywhere. This is the extra safety gear required for the "General" category and the "Headboat/Charter" category of the HMS (Bluefin) permits. Thanks!

There is no special gear requirement for the HMS permit - the requirements are for running a commercial vessel, which is what you must meet to have a general or charter/headboat permit. Those are in 46 CFR Part 28 - they will refer you to requirements in Part 25 too.

Just get the recreational permit and save 3k..all you need is life jackets, flares and a whistle then give the fish away to charity ....!

The requirements are easier if your state registered than documented. Here is a link
http://www.amsea.org/downloads.html

The folks at LRSE, they have a section here, are very helpful.

Keep in mind you can't state register and use the boat for commercial fishing if it is over 5 gross tons - about 26'.
