I hear ya on the location deal, but, believe it or not, they did well off the surf today. On rough days, I'll set up a bait rig with 10 oz pyramid sinker on either my 10'6 or 11' pole. The one I don't use for the bait rig, I use to throw metals. I leave all my 8-9' jigging poles home (on calm days I never go out with less than 4 poles) 8-10 oz was holding today from what I heard, at least in IBSP anyway. Now, if its too rough for even 10oz to hold, I have been told to "live-line clam." Cast out and walk down the beach following the line. Thats how people were catching bass in Seaside in the middle of the Nor'easter from a few weeks ago.
Back on topic now, definitely try the fin-s on the bucktail in the canal. I was told by people at the canal to use that setup there. I haven't been to the canal since, but my friend caught a short using that same setup off the surf on Saturday. Good luck
