Here's my dilema...

I trailer my boat twice a year. Once in March to launch the boat and put it on the slip...once in November to haul out and put in storage. The ramp is 3 miles from each of these places.

Solution:

Hell with doing the right thing...I'll take my chances on getting a ticket for an unregistered trailer. MGL C90 S. 09 (Unregistered Trailer) is a $100 fine. "Ooops, I didn't even realize it...sorry officer...I'll take care of it right away". RMV Kaprilien is getting a little out of control.

PS: Have one of your buddys follow you to the ramp - no police will likely get behind you then.

Mass - a - friggin - chusetts is at it again!! WTF!

Last Thursday had the Ford F550 inspected to pull the trailer - the inspection sticker is now $90.

Then Friday renewed the boat trailer - had to pay $140 for the rest of this year and $240 for next year. Oh yeah, and you get to stand in line for an hour for this privilege.....

Irish Jig:
I'm in same situation and thought about doing the same however, don't forget IF you get ticketed, it then hangs around on your car/truck insurance for SIX years! Found this out the hard way when I blanked on getting an inspection done on my 3 year old car! Unbelievable. BTW my trailer went up to $100. The Admiral thought it was a mistake and we received the wrong notice! Wishful thinking.

If you were to "mis-state" the weight of the trailer when initially registering, you could save the initial title fee AND safe "X" amount ($20/1000 lb) each year thereafter when re-registering. Example: a 5000 lb trailer would need a title ($75 fee??) + cost $100 ea. yr to re-register. Do it as a 3000 pounder and no title required (I believe 3500 lb is the title trigger) and only pay $60 each yr to register.........

What would the liability ramifications be for a non-registered or
mis-stated weight trailer in the event of an accident? If the trailer
isn't registered, is it covered by your auto liability? I would think that
your ins. provider would find this to be a convienient loophole to avoid
paying a claim.

Oh did anyone hear Deval hasn't been able to sleep at night knowing that he is going to be faced with more cuts at the state level....what a TORCH HOLE I'm sure the $12.00/hr factory worker who just lost his job here in Mass cause the company couldn't hold on feels very bad for poor Deval....Freakin TORCH HOLE

In Ohio they now charge you an $20 late fee if you don't get you sticker within 10 days after your birthday. That sucks when you birthday is in the Fall or Winter. Who thinks of buying or takes the time to buy a boat trailer sticker that time of year.

In the years past I usally forget and have to stand in line in the spring which was bad enough but now I will have to pay the penalty fee.

Mine went from $41 to $60. Basically go up and down the ramp, leave the boat in the water. But I do have to go about 15 miles to store the trailer for the summer.

Was just thinking the same thing! If $100 fine as posted above is correct, there might be a lot of people taking that chance next season.

Sold my big boat a few years ago, sold my tractor and it's trailer and sold my utility trailer as well. I now have a small trailer for my Lund which cost $20 to register. I was just tired of getting fee'd to death. I don't need to own any of these things.

If we citizens got something in return for the money for these registrations it would be one thing, but using registration money to keep state employees employed in unrelated jobs is just not acceptable.

Guys like Kudlow have it right, CUT taxes and we will spend more. Increase taxes and we will spend less. One way is good for businesses and individuals AND the tax base, the other way is good for none.

I noticed my reg. has a weight on it (I must have told them what my boat/trailer weight was). I wonder if I say it's wrong and "the trailer weighs less than 1,000lbs" if I could reduce my trailer reg. cost?

The problem is that they lump boat trailers in with commercial
trailers, which I assume would include the over the road
commercial variety which must equal BIG BUCKs for the state.

I'm pretty sure that the car's liability coverage extends to what you tow - registered or not. However, physical damages have to be covered under a separate policy - usually written by someone who specializes in boat policies.

FYI, answering my own question...from www.mass.gov/rmv

If the total gross weight of a trailer - the combined weight of the trailer and its cargo - is 3,000 lbs. or less, no title is required. If the total gross weight of a trailer is 3,001 lbs. or more, a title is required. The gross weight of a trailer is determined by the manufacturer and will appear on the trailer's Certificate of Origin and on the trailer itself.

So, giving the weight of just your trailer isn't really an option. These renewals require an insurance stamp too, so you'd have to have your insurance approve a weight change (not going to happen).

Is there an emoticon for "bend over and take it in the seat from the Tax man"? $100 to "register" my trailer that travels <500 a year, what a joke. For those that only use their trailer to launch in the beginning of the season and haul out at the end I would seriously consider just going unregistered.

I recently renewed my drivers license. What a friggin joke that was. They closed the Falmouth and Orleans office. So now everyone has to go to Yarmouth. I sat there for 4 hrs. Then the lady tried to refuse me my renewal as I'm blind on my left side and I told her so I could not see the left colum of letters. Finally I off set the on button and passed it. Paid my fee of $75.00 the last time I renewed it was $65.00. As I was leaveing the lady in the next both yelled at the lady for not pulling up the devider in the scope.
I got my trailer renewal today. I'm haveing a hard time sitting down in this state. My fee went from $77.00 to $120.00. If they can not rape your pockets one way they'll get it another. I think once the economy gets going again this is going to be one of he last states to see a pickup.

You guys want some more bad news. Well, I bet 99% of boat owners don't actually insure their trailers on their auto policy. Never really need to worry about it as the trailer follows the liability of the tow vehicles. Every year we all just go to the insurance agent, get it stamped and send it in. Get this. MA IS NOW REVOKING REGISTRATIONS FOR "NOT HAVING INSURANCE". I work for an insurance agency and we have received a ton of calls lately. The insurance companies had no idea about it either. It is a total bonehead move by the state and just creates a lot of work for everyone but them. Wait until you get that one in the mail. Now most likely have to list trailers on policy (prob no charge) to get around it.
