Default NY Saltwater License

I was on the NY DEC website to day and one part says you need the new licence for Stripers and several other migratory species. In some other part it hints that you need the license for ALL fish. Does anyone speak legal who can translate..2nd questin..its very awkward for anyone who come on my boat to fish( private boat) , to buy a license...can I pay more to cover anyone who comes on my boat so my neighbor who fishes once in his life doesnt have to buy a license, and then my other neighbor who comes next weekend once a season doesn't have to buy one too? Or is this to screw anyone who might ever pick up a fishingpole out of 10 bucks ..thanks

We have been paying a pretty hefty fee here in Florida for some time. Right now our annual license is $32.50. If our family members come in from out of town and want to fish, the 3 day license is $17.50. We also just enacted a shore fishing license, which we never had before..I hear that all coastal states were told by the Fed's either they would charge or the states had to charge for this new license...

I spent $20 today on a salt water fishing license. $10 from 10/1 to 12/31/09 and $10 more for 1/1/10 to 12/31/10. The guy at Edwards sporting goods in Riverhead said that you need a commercial license to get a permit for your boat. He said it was about $400. If you bring your buddy out for the day they are supposed to get a day pass. I think they are $3 and available at most bait shops.

how are they going to know who's fishing on the boat and who's not? My uncle comes on the boat just for the ride...never fishes, just to get away for a little bit and drink! he's not going to buy a license, just to go on my boat!

Towns of Southampton, East Hampton & Shelter Island have blocked the license for now:

I for one don't mind paying for a permit if the money was going to be used to actually help enhance our local fisheries management or even help hurting commercial fisherman to transition to a new field. The way this tax looks now, its not clear where the money is going.

There is no such thing as a boat license in NY unless you are charter/ party boat.. So anyone fishing in the "marine district" or for marine species outside the marine district.. i.e Stripers on the Hudson above the TZ bridge.. . in short.. anyone fishing in saltwater whether on foot or in private boats will be required to have the license.. Just like we do in freshwater.. They are offering temporary licenses for out of towners... but pretty much everyone is required.. The part that really frosts 'em on me is the requirement for Oct-1 to Jan 1st this first year.. The license year for all other sporting licenses in NY runs from Oct1-Sept 30th .. But they decided this one license will run from Jan 1st and are making us take another bite of the turd sandwich if we wanna fish this fall... not even a pro-rated price for a 1/3 season.. A real sleazy move IMO.. In an era of rediculous regs , NY is outdoing itself.. A main reason why I keep my SW boat in Jersey.. They just wacked me for close to $100 for my hunting /freshwater licenses..They not getting another nickle out of me until Jan 1st..

This license is total bull$#!^. Just another squeeze by New York State to raise revenue to line their pockets with

Anybody remember Bob Matherson from the OBI. His club used to be on the Ocean Parkway in Babylon. His slogan was "Get out of New York Sate before it's too late"

The man was right!! This is just the beginning. Sorry for the rant. RK

It is not the license that has got us NYers pissed off - we realise under the Federal rules one is needed for 2010, its the fact having it in place for 3 months in 2009 is nothing short of a money grab. NYS is making you spend the money for a license for 10/1-12/31-2009, when for most of us that is maybe 2-3 fishing trips, and the money is essentially going to the general fund to plug that $30 billion hole in the budget.

I've been seeing a DEC truck sniffing around the local marinas the last few days. Funny thing is I never seen it before. I wonder what he's up to.

Same here in CT. I see a DEP guy sitting in his truck at the launch (the 2 that I use most) and he doesn't seem to do anything but observe. I've never seen this before and it's going on about the last 2 months. ???

The bigger question we need to ask ourselves is how long it will be before the price of the license goes from $10 to $20 then to $50 a year; we all know it will. I am thinking that the breakeven for a lifetime license (now $150) is going to be 7 years, and will be going waay up since the lifetime freshwater license is $460. This assumes you don't believe that NYS will do away with the fee in a few years - and if you do, I can get you a great deal on a bridge in Brooklyn.

Check the general fishing forum on noreast dot com. They have been having a lively discussion on how the license works.

There seems to be consensus that if you are actively fishing for ANY species in state waters, you will need a license.

There is a divided opinion on how fish caught offshore would be handled if you have an nmfs hms permit. Most people seem to think you are safe to land palegic species in NY without a nyswl as long as you don't actively fish in state waters.

As always though, as 10 cops and you will get 12 differing answers. The only one that will matter is the one that boards your boat.

Not sure about the saltwater license, but for freshwater, they counted people and then fishing rods. 4 people, 4 fishing rods, you needed 4 licenses.

That is fact. The license only applies to fishing, and thus fish caught with the 3 nm state territorial limit. So for Tuna, Swordfish, Mahi and Shark, no license is needed. The bigger issue is whether with Bluefish, Fluke and Sea Bass, which can be caught in both places, is if they have to catch you in the act of fishing in state waters to cite you, or is there a presumption for species that can be caught in both areas, that you did so in NY? The law is silent on that point.

Anyone want to buy my intrepid, if they would have done this last year, I would have saved over 20 grand buying it, this is crazy. Offshore only, for me
