Default Bluefin bait after pogies are gone

The last couple of years have had tuna around into November (I understand. My engines were giving me problems the last two years).

After the pogies leave the harbors of south shore MA, what is the bait of choice for bluefin tuna in CCB or the Bank? I'd think mackeral but mackeral are not quite as easy and reliable to find in the fall as they are in the spring.

This is when the mackeral you put in your freezer in the spring pays dividends.

I know of one person who got a 68" tuna yesterday on a dead mack.

We found macks pretty easily last year in november. As the water cools inshore and the tinkers start to show dont be afraid otchum them. The dog should be thinner inshore. Also dont over look Harbor Polock. Live bait will be smokin this year on the bank as these fish are even closer to adults and will be looking to fatten up..

sabiki rigs. herring, whiting.

You guys are all so hung up on live bait.(fighting over $100 a dozen pogies LOL) Unless your fishing strictly giants, you don't need live bait. You can catch the smaller ones many different ways. I went out for my first time this year on Sunday. I got to a spot I fished last year,(no recent intel) came down off plane, tied on a jig, marked a few fish, dropped the jig ,hopped it twice and hooked up! At noontime! I landed a 60 some in. fish half hour later. I fished for about 45 seconds before hooking up! I'm not saying it's that easy ,Obviously I got lucky. But the live bait Craze this year is foolish nonsense. yea anybody can catch them with live bait, but with just a little knowhow you can catch em just fine without it.

I've jigged, I've trolled...Just about everything. Only been out a half a dozen times. One hook up to show for it..Lost him to a bent hook. Cought a couple last year live lining but have been unsuccessful finding pogies this year. I haven't been out in a month but hope I can find some pogies now. Fish out of Plymouth. Has anyone seen any?

Last year, while heading out east of the bank codfishing, I spotted what looked like fish right on the bank (on the bottom) while still 10 miles or so from where I was going to bottom fish.

Thinking it might be a pod of pollack I dropped my home made cod jig (terribly rusted up electrical conduit EMT full of lead) down to the bottom. It never hit the bottom and about 20/30 minutes later I had a 50-60lb bluefiin to show for it.

Maybe NorthCoast is right, live bait is overrated. I thought my experience was a fluke.

I've heard you need a hi-speed retrieve for this. I was using a penn 113H on a cod rod.
