Any further advice on the tides? I have been boating on the Maine coast all my life, but never been north of Bath, I have all the charts and electronics, plan to avoid the Hell's Gates during the peak flow/ebb, any thing else to be concerned with?
Also take care after the Knuble before you enter the Sheepscot there is a bouy that gets sucked under on the ebb and a hidden rock... otherwise it is "normal" Maine boating have fun thats a great route and the tugboat is fine we have stayed there several times
X2 for the Kennebec tavern. What is your air draft? the railroad bridge in Bath can be a pain to get to open, but with less that 20' air draft you should be ok. there is more clearance on the east side of the river.
The Sasanoa river is a very nice ride, but can be narrow and tricky at low tide, and strong currents. remember that the tide in Bath is 1 hour behind the tide at Ft Popham.
and the bridge in Townsend Gut opens at the top and bottom of the hour
Also, we are staying at the Tugboat Inn in Boothbay- good or bad?
My wife and I stayed at the Admiral's Quarters Inn for a week 3 or 4 years ago, right across the street from the Tugboat. You are literally on or even over the water at that place. Their restaurant was rocking every night. We enjoyed our stay, and most of what we did was within walking distance. The harbor is gorgeous, the tides are huge (and the ones I'm used to are 5.5 to 7 feet). Check out the lobster co-op at the wharf if you get a chance and grab a steamed dinner.
Had an awesome time. Saturday it was blowing pretty hard (Small craft advisory) but we went anyway, the wind was at our back. We went up the Kennebec to Bath and had lunch at the Kennebec Tavern, great food.
Next we went down the inside passage towards boothbay harbor. It was an amazing ride with the tide ripping pretty good, lower hells gate was great, We saw about 10-12 boats all day, it was dead out there. We arrived in Boothbay at 4:45 and got our slip at the Tug Boat Inn. Again, Boothbay was very quiet.
I will say that the Carosel Marina is telling everyone that the Tug Boat Inn is the public landing, they are encouraging people to dock there and not pay, I witnessed it first hand. I did fuel up there, but that is all the money they will ever see from me, not a good way to conduct business.
On the way back to Portland we took the outside passage, what a quick ride back. We burned 18 gallons of fuel compared to the 27 gallons by going the inside route.
We also stopped at Eagle Island and were able to take a tour of Pearys home, amazing stuff. We were the last vistors of the year, talk about luck.
Just an amazing time, something I have been looking forward to for years. I will post pictures eventually.
Surprised you enjoyed the Kenebec Tavern, we've been going there for years and thi summer the service has been terrible and the food below average. Next time try Cooks Restaurant on Bailey Island, not far from Eagle Island. and they have a dock.
Have you every done the http://www.dolphinmarinaandrestaurant.com/ it just north of Eagle Island .I got some lobster next to them cheap, 3.50 a pound.portland to there is a nice trip , all in the Islands of casco bay.
I have gone to the Dolphin many times as well, I think they are closed for the season shortly, where did the summer go? I went to have dinner on Peaks Island Tuesday and everything was closed up.
