South Jersey Fishing Report - Weather Dampens Fishing, Not Catching
Despite the adverse weather conditions this weekend, we got in 3 out of 4 trips...and caught fish on all of them. I'll take it.
On Friday, we got out before the blow up here in NJ (although it threatened to blow all day). We started out on bluefish under birds in the inlet in the morning, then headed offshore. Lots of throwback sea bass, and wound up with 129 keepers to 3 1/2 pounds. Had a 6 pound tog, also, on the last stop of the day. With the 14 blues that we kept from the morning, we had a box of 144 fish.
Saturday's morning wreck trip I cancelled (no interest in the blues). But in the afternoon, Paul wanted to get his young son Liam and family out while they were on vacation. We got a lull in the rain and I took them to the lee side of the bay where we got some protection from the wind and proceeded to catch 2-3 blues on the troll until Liam was tired out. It is always great fun seeing little kids catching fish and having a good time. We got back to the dock just before the rain came on again.
The forecast was for the blow to let up overnite, but when I got to the dock on Sunday morning I knew we weren't going on the ocean. I offered the opportunity to reschedule, but they wanted to fish. So we went down the inlet. The bluefish weren't what I hoped with the bottom all torn up from the blow. I again offered the chance to come back another day, but they wanted to keep fishing so we picked at the blues through the morning and when the tide finally stopped flooding, the weed dropped off and we had some good fishing for a bit, catching about 2 dozen blues and keeping 18 (along with a big sea herring). Not great, but considering the weather, it was a fun day and everyone caught some fish.
