Default Shelter Island, NY

Hoping to run boat from Montauk to Shelter Island and we've never been. Appreciate any recommendations on where to dock and grab a casual lunch with kids.

The only place to go is Deering Harbor, on the north side across from Greenport. There are other harbors (West Neck, Coecles), but nothing really there. Deering has a town dock, free, first come first served. From there, you can walk around Shelter Island Heights and there are several restaurants: Dory, Chequit Inn, etc. Or you can go into the town marina in Greenport on the other side; plenty of places to eat there. After this Labor Day weekend, they'll be plenty of room.

You can also anchor in Coecles harbor and go to the Rams Head Inn.
The first suggestion however will give you better access to "town".

Sunset beach is a nice place to go but can be busy on weekends. Its popular for boats to anchor along Crescent beach to the left of the restaurant and walk up.

Is there a protected anchorage in the area that is relatively calm with a moderate North wind? I am looking for a stopover between Western Sound and Hampton Bays tomorrow - Friday Sep 18.

Thanks!

If you're going to overnight and eat on board, either Coecles or West Neck will fit your needs. Sheltered anchorages with plenty of room to swing. Come through Plum Gut And check your chart; both are on the south side of the island. Short hop to Shinnecock/Hampton Bays from there.

Hey thanks for the quick reply! Much appreciated. That looked like a good choice based on the map, but nice to have it confirmed.

Do you know if there are any near shore places to fish for Bass or Blues this time of year....just to pass the time?

A friend of mine used to make that trip every year in a large slower boat, he took the southern route avoiding plum gut. He said it was no problem, just follow the bouys. Its not clear to me which route is best.

Interesting - never thought of going in that direction - we are in Western Connecticut... would probably make sense from New York.

Unless it's really ripping (which isn't forecast) Plum Gut's no big deal. As you come through, you'll see Gardiner's Island to the south. Steer sw between Gardiner's and Ram Island on Shelter. First one you'll hit, right around the point of Ram Island Point, will be Coecles. Or continue sw around Shelter Island, past Sag Harbor and the South Ferry, and you'll hit West Neck.
