Mystic CT Where to stay and what to do..see..etc.other then the obvious..
I've been to Mystic many times but never for more then a day. I traveling up with my wife and our two daughters (2 and 4) . Were going to the Aquarium and Seaport, We'll eat at the Daniel Packer Inn and prob spend a few hours in Stonington and have lunch at Skippers.
Any other recomendation for resturants, places to check out, activites,
etc?
I'm also looking for recomendations for places to stay. I've seen mixed reviews on the Inn at Mystic. I've stay at the Marriott in Groton and liked it but I'd like to be "in" Mystic.
We were in Mystic at the Mystic Downtown Marina a couple of weeks ago and ate at the S&P Oyster House on the other side of the bridge. Very Good. Also, J Anthony's across the street from S&P. Also, good.
Try the Whalers Inn in Downtown Mystic for accomodations. Restaurants include Bravo Bravo (located at Whalers Inn) Excellent food and can get noisy / crowded. Also AZU on the opposite side of the bridge, same ownership and also great food and lively atmosphere. Not too many beaches that are accessible in CT, you may need to go to RI. Watch Hill is a great beach but parking is not easy or cheap. Enjoy.
Closer to CT you have misquamicut (sp), east beach (actually the beaches just before east beach. East beach is 4X4 only), charlestown beach (2 beaches, 1 at the end of the road before making a right to travel towards the breachway and another at the breachway), Matunuck and East Matunuck, Scarboro, Roger Wheeler, Naragansett. These are listed starting closest to CT. Misquamicut has the most life as far as water slide, shops, etc.. The middle beaches are the most quiet in terms of anything else around but for beach. I like Charestown myself near the Breachway because it is a bit quieter. Naragansett also has a bit more going on in terms of restaurants and some stores. I may have missed a couple but these are the major ones. My least favorite is Scarboro with its large parking area as it can get vry packed. Also not a fan of beaching right beside the sewage treatment outflow.
GW,
DON"T stay at the Inn at Mystic. Very outdated, not overly clean, afternoon tea is a joke, Continental breakfast is no prize and I'd rather swim in the river than the pool.
We just recently stayed there 3 nights with my wife and kids (11,14 &16) and we could never recommend this place to anyone. My wife found it online and it looked great. However, she never read any reviews but I did just before we headed out on the road. Unfortunately, most of the negative reviews were correct. I would stay at the Hyatt near 95 the next time we go and my wife would stay the the Whalers Inn downtown.
On the west side of the bridge we ate at the Ancient Mariner a couple times (live music, great food, drinks & service). We'll absolutely go there again. Mystic Pizza was perfect for our family as well. The Equinox Diner near 95 had a good menu and we'd go there again. Wouldn't recommend the overpriced Steak Loft. Service was fair, and the food was barely ok. Honestly, my entire family wished we went to Friendly's across the street instead.
We went to the Mystic Aquarium & Seaport, Ocean Park Beach, Stonnington, every marina within driving distance and then Battleship Cove on the way home.
We took every side street and alley that we possibly could if we thought it would lead us to a marina or boat yard. Quite honestly, I don't know where the heck we were half of the time.
I could not believe that my wife and kids had fun as well. Then again, when everyone knew that each trip would end with an ice cream or alcohol (not the kids) it was very easy to persuade them.
We just followed the outermost points as close to the water and just kept going. A couple times we ran into a dead end but that was part of exploring.
Mystic River Marina on Masons Island for the few big sportfishes ( matching 61 vikings and a 54 bertram). Nonak shipyard for the few CC's and the best view of fishers island sound. Bravo Bravo is the best meal downtown, Olio in Groton owned by the same people is very good as well and a short drive away. As far as beaches most of the good ones in RI are 20 mins away, just start in Watch hill and drive down the coast, great views and youll find a beach you like for sure. I know the area well so if you have any questions feel free to ask.
The casinos have loads of eating places, shops and gaming. Also there is the Native American Museum that the kids would love. As far as beaches, Point Judith RI, a real fishing village, is nearby with Scarborough Beach. And have you ever seen the Newport Mansions, like The Breakers (Vanderbilt)?

Try The Dogwatch in Stonington Borough. Its adjacent/part of Dodson's Boatyard.
Great views, good food, NOT expensive, and kid friendly.
And a nice walk down Water Street is easy with the Town Dock playground right there. Dubois Beach is at the end of Water St too.
Have fun.
If you don't have the time to visit Mystic Seaport (you really need a full day),
you can at least check out the Charles W Morgan from the corner of Bay and Isham Street. The restoration project is taking place right there and you really get a great view.
