Default Any Mahi off south shore of LI

Is anyone picking up any Mahi off the South shore of Long Island? I ran out of Fire Island inlet today and did not see anything, no bait fish or much happening at all. But, it was a beautiful day on the water even if no fish made it in the boat

How far out did you run - don't usually see Mahi less than 20 miles or so out, and usually farther than that.

We were about 18 miles out of FI inlet. I have seen them closer but nothing so far this year.

On this topic I heard there was some Mahi at AP.
By the way, where is the AP?

AP = Atlantic princess

Btw I have hooked Mahi less than 1 mile from Shinnecock inlet in years past, and I know they have taken them from the jetties as well.

Got a lot 2 weeks ago about 30 mi from the point. Three fish over 42". Unfortunately they were feeding on what appeared to be juvenile skipjacks (numerous in their bellies) and the mahi tasted like oily bluefish... yuk
Third time this has happened to me in 5 or so years. What a waste.

Never caught a bad tasting Mahi.
Thanks for the heads up about the AP, but thats a bit far to run for Mahi. I have also found them just off shore and have not needed to run out to the canyon or more than 25miles out. Usually, around any floating debris, rafts of weed, lobster floats or anything else floating on top of the water. I just have not been on them this year and was wondering if anyone else had picked any up on the south shore. I run out of FI inlet and Jones.

They are definitely closer but if you dont find anything floating....... now what do you do?

Yeah, its weird when they get oily. I thought it was me but two guys i mentioned it to had similar results recently as well. Such a disappointment.. Tastes EXACTLY like bluefish but not quite as strong. Makes sense as they grow so fast they must be influenced by what they are feeding on. The smaller fish were ok though.

I guess it must be what they feed on that influences taste, the last fresh fillet that I was given caught off of long island was delicious, and definitely did not taste anything at all like bluefish.
