Default Knots - Are there secure & easy to tie ones?

For all intensive purposes I'm a relatively new fisherman. I have not yet mastered the art of knots. I lost two tunas last week and I'm looking for some help.

What is the best knot to use when attaching braided line to a flurocarbon leader?

What's the best knot to use when attaching barrel swivels.

Thanks for any help.

I've never fished for Tuna (yet), however, when I tie braid to leader, I use a uni to uni knot. When tying to swivels, I usually tie a palamar knot. The line on the other side of the swivel ususally gets a Uni knot.

hey, Cabooth, I gotta good site for you.

Check out:

http://www.leadertec.com/tips_index2.html

Click on the 'knots' link there, or leaders, or whatever you are interested in. look around the site. That should get you started.

I know of another site that you will like, but I have to go find the link.

Edit:
Back already, you'll like this site. Choose the knot, and you can slow down the animation, or do a step-by-step.

Happy trails.

braid to mono - blood knot
swivels, etc - palomar
end of line/leader where a palomar is not possible with mono - clinch
end of line/leader where a palomar is not possible with braid - improved clinch
200 lb mono - crimp

These are all the knots I use.
I catch herring off the dock all the way up to giant bluefin
Just make sure you make more wraps with light line and less with heavier line. I have not slipped a knot since I can remember

IMHO palomar is the easiest to tie ... I dont know what you mean by braided line ?? Power pro or dacron ?? Floro leaders you should use a crimp, google knots by grog .. great site for knots, without seeing your setup its hard to offer suggestions, good luck, go to your local big game outfitter most are willing to help with questions like yours.

tie a palomar to a small 150lb Spro swivel then tie a palomar to rig, if trolling. If chunking use a Sampo 150lb swivel with above directions I have used palomars for 20 years and have NEVER had a knot fail. We have used the above methods for fish up to 285 lb Bigeye and 357lb threshers No failures. We have had leaders and running line break however. Good luck. Don't set your drags at more that 25% of the breaking strength of running line and you will be fine

I have been having issues trying to tie 60 lb. fluro to a swivel. Maybe a crimp is the only way to do it. It's like trying to tie a knot in a piece of wire coat hanger.

Braid to fluoro - uni to uni
Fluoro to swivel - clinch or palomar (I crimp 80 pound and above)
Braid to swivel - palomar

Learn how to tie 1 or 2 knots really well and don't screw around with the rest. Once you have 2 down well, learn another, then another.

I use three knots (the three listed above) and they cover all my needs. Tie them correctly and set your drags correctly and you won't have failures.

It sounds like you might be running braid to leader on spinning rod outfit. The guys a First Light Anglers specialize light tackle (Fly and spin casting) fishing for tuna. They use a "Slim Beauty Knot" for that. Go to their website and the knot is on there under "Fishing Resources". I'm not a great knot tier either but I can easily tie the Slim Beauty.

They also suggest crimping when using Flouro Carbon, so they use the Slim Beauty (braid to Flouro) and then crimp the lure on.

Personally, I would forget about the UNI to UNI for tuna fishing and I found my palamars would not hold either. I'm now using the Slim Beauty and crimping on my spinning out fits, and the bimmni and crimping on my trolling outfits.

Good luck.

I finally managed to get an Albright to work braid to Fluro. It passes through the rod guides, too.

I must have tried four or five uni's in the fluro, even pulling them tight with pliers. Nope. No go. Too stiff.

I"m a knucklehead with knots too. Print it out, laminate it and keep it on the boat.

Braid to fluoro - red phillips
Fluoro to swivel - 8 twist clinch
Braid to swivel - 30-40 twist bimini twist to make a loop that will loop-to-loop with swivel loop

The bimini twist is a really, really strong knot (near 100% break strength). But it takes practice to tie them well. Learn how to tie them and you'll catch more big fish because you will not lose them to weak knots.

That red phillips knot looks reasonable. But anyone who is tying uni's in 60 lb. penn pro fluro must have some limper fluro than I got.
