Why would boats be sinking in Nantucket Harbor? That seems nuts.

Beleive it or not. Nantucket Harbor is a vast amount of water space. When a NE storm brews. It can really kick up the seas. Last November a storm came in. The winds picked up the seas in the harobor to 6-8 feet. That storm did a lot of damage to this years scollop harvest. The seas got so rouch that day. That it pushed all the seed scollops on to the beaches. They were in some places 4 feet deep.

6 to 8 feet is a mighty exaggeration but it does get really nasty when there is a strong blow from the NE. I've seen it just about at it's worst in fall Northeasters and tropical storms. Water depth limits the chop in there to about two feet but waist high waves can do some damage in a harbor. Especially when the tide puts boats above the pilings.

My father came across Monday morning on the wrong tide and said it was the worst he's seen. He's done the trip when it was blowing over 70 and routinely crosses when the ferries are not running during the winter so I'd call it a bad storm.

I guess that storm would explain all the debris in the water today. There was way more than the normal number of logs floating around the bank, some the size of telephone poles! Be careful out there....

There are an almost unlimited number of reasons a 46 foot boat would sink during a storm.

Usually it has something to do with a fitting coming loose (hose, thru-hull, water separator, etc) and water being allowed to come in over a period of time. Eventually the pumps either fail, batteries drain, or the inflow just exceeds the outflow.

Occasionally, it's another reason like a prop getting smashed on the bottom and pulling a shaft, punching a support through, or maybe an object putting a hole in the hull, or the issue that a boat is more valuable on the bottom than in yachtworld.

Stuff like that.

idk how much of an exaggeration that was...people were sayin there were 3-5' rollers hitting some of the beaches in the harbor...I know I saw water coming over a sea wall typically 3 feet higher than the water level at high tide... Im pretty sure that picture was taken a day or two after the height of the storm.
