Default Block Island help

Hi all,
I have been trailer boating in narragansett bay for a long time and now recently have a larger more well equipped boat (for instance against my better judgement never had a VHF before now). Was hoping to make the run over to block Island Memorial day weekend if the weather looked good. Heard about the Oar and their mudslides. Any advice on how best to approach to get there, where to dock, or who to hail on what channel would be appreciated.

also any place I can find this info out on my own? thanks!

Sorry if these are dumb questions to you all....

It will ( or at least historically ) be filled up pretty quickly on Block that weekend, especially if the weather is nice. 5 day is showing thurs and fri to be sunny and in the 80's right now. Get there early, hail any dock you can for a slip, and if not, bring a tender and toss your boat on a mooring. Good Luck!

Well you have two options....New Harbor (closer to the mud slides and full service fuel) on the West side of the island or Old Harbor (closer to center of town) on the East side of the island.

The very limited number of slips and moorings in Old Harbor make it difficult. The slips do not offer floating docks which is a pain. Depending upon the size of your vessel and the crowds you may be 3 deep (as in, two other vessels tied up along side of you). You can also opt to anchor behind the breakwater but you need to make sure you're deep enough to stay afloat at low tide but close enough to be out of the way of the large ferries. It has been two years since I have been to Block Island but there are (busy) showers/bathrooms available on the dock. You need to buy tokens from the dockmaster.

New Harbor offers more boating services and facilities. There is also an area where you can throw anchor and call a water taxi. There is a lot to do there but you will need to take a taxi or be up for a good hike to get to the center of town. New Harbor offers floating docks as I recall but verify that.

You're looking at about $100 a night for a slip for a 25' boat.

Fog and weather can roll in thick as you know in the Block Island Sound. Have more than 1 GPS aboard and all the other usual safety devices (charts, charting tools, comfort in using them, good fixed mount VHF with 8' antenna, etc.)

Have fun! I have spent Mem Day Weekends there when there were zero crowds. July 4th weekend is another matter - it's a zoo with the punks howling at the moon all night long.

Default New Harbor

The Block Island Boat Basin in New Harbor is the way to go. Here is there number 401-466-2631. The docks are directly in front of the Oar restaurant. This is the only dockage in New Harbor that you don't raft up so if you want to get out fishing or boating for the day you can. If they are full, Champlin's or Payne's dock are a good option but you will be rafted up.

You can ask for Joe or Justin at the Boat Basin. No fuel at the Boat Basin but Payne's and Champlins both have fuel. I have been going to BI for the last 4 summers and I always stay at the Boat Basin. I'll be there again this summer more than once I'm sure.

Don't bother with Old Harbor, the ferry traffic is not worth the hassle.
