Default Potters Cove Mooring

Looking for a mooring for Potters Cove (North East corner of Prudence Island). Interested in renting for the season or any portion. Frequently visit this cove to swim with the family and would prefer to not have to anchor.

There are park service moorings in Potters Cove I believe that are for use by anyone. When I go there I always find vacant moorings.

Unless you're overnighting, you should be fine just hooking up to an empty mooring. There's always a ton of vacant moorings.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the reply. There are typically moorings that are vacant, for a couple of years it was never a problem. Last summer I was kicked off a mooring by Portsmouth police boat. I started dropping the hook after that and I did see them there a second time and they kicked off other boats. Not sure if maybe an owner of a mooring complained that there was always a boat on their mooring or not but something seems to have caused them to patrol the area. They had a clipboard with them that seems to have been a list of the owners name. I overheard another boat they were speaking to that was actually the owner because they seemed to check the list they had when he gave them his name.

I was hoping to see if there was anybody on this forum that might own one that doesn't use it.

People whom think like you, are the reason for the numerous patrols by PPD. Moorings are private property, not yours for use if the owner is not on it. Not all moorings are the same and some have been damaged and even moved by boats that were too heavy for them or by multiple boats rafted off on one mooring.
There are maybe five guest moorings the DEM has in the cove, they are first come first serve.

Since the Portsmouth police Harbormasters have juristriction at Prrudence Island I would suggest you call them and ask about public moorings which I don't think exist. http://www.portsmouthri.com/police/harbor2.htm

I agree with SeeVeeCapt that just hooking up to a private mooring without pemission is the wrong approach. RIfishing; would your statement also hold true for an empty slip at a private dock? A mooring that is privately owned is private property period. Prudence Island/Portsmouth residents own numerous moorings there and just because the mooring is vacant doesn't mean it is yours to use. The boats told to move by the PPD were due to owners calling the police and requesting that the squatter gets off their mooring.
