Default What is living in my yard?

I recently purchsed a house in Rowley, MA and after the snow melted I found that there are three large burrows in the back yard. The opening to the burrows is about 5-6" in diamter and there is a large pile of sand at the exit to each one where the refuse was cooped to.

I have seen some rabbit turds, but, these look like much bigger holes that a rabbit would create.

This weekend I will get soem pictures and post them.

When I lived up in Mass I used to get woodchucks that did that. It happened in two places that I lived. I used the bombs, where you block all the exit holes and then light one up and throw it in and stop up the last hole.

At the other place I made a game out of it, bought a Benjamin pump .22 air rifle, put a little scope on it, and shot them in the head.

Sounds like woodchuck holes to me. If you are lucky the chucks have left and the rabbits have moved in otherwise best get to the range and sight in that scope

I had a family of skunks burrowing under my porch. I "eliminated" them one at a time every morning before tuna fishing. if they are skunks do what I did.
step 1: dig hole
step 2: bait hole
step 3: spotlight and fire
step 4: gently place animal in hole and cover before it stinks!!
step 5: repeat process till the threat is eliminated.

Welcome to Essex County! That's a big move from Fort Lauderdale.

Rowley is a nice town. I used to live in Newbury and did a lot of work with Scouts in Rowley.

Sure sounds like gopher holes as mentioned above.

Rowley is still fairly rural and there is no shortage of guys in flannel shirts driving rusty pickup trucks in town, but you should probably check with the animal control officer before you take matters in to your own hands.

I grew up in Swampscott so Essex County is back home to me. Rowley was a nice choice in terms of getting more room around us than we had in Ft Lauderdale.

Thanks for the link. I am not about to start war on wildlife in my backyard. I just want to know what is living there. My guess is that my dog will annoy any pests into seekeing greener pastures.

Chucks.

Starting fluid sparyed into hole. Light match. Stand back before tossing it into said hole.

The coyotes will keep the groundhog population in check.

That's d#mn funny! And timely! Just about spit my drink out my nose!

The fisher cats will take down a gopher too, for sure.

sams, my property in Newbury (Byfield) backed up to the Georgetown line near the Parker River and you could frequently hear the fishers howling. Be sure to keep your pets inside at night.

I lived in Swampscott for a few years as well, right on Burrill Street, between the train tracks and Paradise Road.
