Default Mass. State Comm. Fluke Permit

Mass. State Commercial Fluke Permit
So what is the real deal with this.

I know I lost my permit back in college, was oversea's for a while and never thought it was going to happen. My stupid mistake of course.

Just wondering if anyone has ever transfered one, bought one, etc?

Surely not lucky enough to buy one, are these leasable in a sense?

Only the draggers can transfer them, but not the hook permits, they can't be transferred.

That's real fair, huh?

That figures but doesnt suprise me at all. I know ever since I've tried to dip my hand in commercial fishing its always been against the grind. Try to work when I'm on the ship but work on the water when at home too. I know when we moved to the big boat, lost my nice 300lb cod permit too, god I see the open access permits are now at 75lbs? Insane, which I could have had it for this General Marine 26. We all know the writing is on the wall, been there for a while too I guess. I see anyone after 2008 for a commercial permit, the state can pull it whenever it deams it...

Funny, but you already have a job. So, seeing as we are living with greatly diminished quotas and there are literally thousands of dependent fishermen who are doing without, why should we issue permits to folks who aren't intending to make their living form fishing?

25 years ago, this wasn't an issue. If we didn't have quotas this wouldn't be an issue, but we do. There needs to be a way for new entrants into fisheries, but only for folks who are going to do it for a living, there simply isn't room for part timers anymore, no offense.

To your original question- fluke permits were made limited entry in 1998. There were over 800 hook permits issued at the time, you could have had one and you say you did, so either you couldn't afford the 30 dollars or you didn't send in your catch report?

Gee, probably because I had half a dozen commercial fisherman pounding me on the head telling me to finish my time at Mass. Maritime? Sure they were right about that but I'm trying to make my way home right now, because I would like to spend more than 4 months a year with my family. I'd like to be at home a few more than a 100 nights a year. Ever spend 8 months of the year out of touch from family, barely any communication until lately. Just not my bag and would have liked to moved back to where I was before and be full time!

By the way, I've probably helped more than a half dozen commercial fisherman that I have run into, move into being professional mariners, getting them jobs with benefits. They are some of the best people I know and also make the best mariners.

To the original question too is that I wasnt smart enough when I was 19 or 20, permits were in the boats name, not mine, under my fathers control and he never renewed. So that is really what happend there. I never thought that they would have done that at the time and one lapse. I was not really even around in MASS then between sea terms at MMA and being kicked out, worked elsewhere.
