Given the size of my boat what would be a good price to pay for a slip. boat is a 19' pro-line. I want a slip in the northshore. Towns i was interested in were lynn, beverly, and salem.
Oneforwater i would love to pay 2300, that would be a great price compared to what ive have had offered to me
and that price is for my 26' cat. Just goes to show that you can always find a deal. Try driving around local waterfront neighborhoods. That's how I found it and a lot of others. During the off season people will have slip for rent signs out for slips behind their houses or business. I found that many were the same or lower than marina prices but with better convenience and security. Now and then you will find someone who is just trying to rent a slip and not make a killing. There are 6 slips at my place and everyone looks after everyones boats. If there is a problem I will get a call long before it becomes a disaster. I have heard of many phone calls from marinas telling people their boat is on the bottom. That crap should never happen with so many other boats around and people in and out all day long. Someone usually sees something. With a small goup of friendly people, that call is made much sooner and help is rendered without delay or having to negotiate a cost. Some marinas are good like that but I have heard of too many that just don't care.

Crystal Cove Marina in winthrop is fair with their pricing, also try the new town marina there, sussposed to be commercial only but I think that rule is bent often.

You might want to call Danversport Yacht Club. When I was looking in the spring, they were a lot less expensive than I expected.

Also, posted on Craigslist today: http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/boa/980990624.html

Thats even more frustrating. $142x19' is $2600 and some change. I got quoted $3600. so there just trying to rape an uneducated consumer of his hard earned baitfish money good find 192tourney.

I have been in Salem for 9 years. The cost of a slip will always be the very most expensive option to store your boat. It is dramatically cheaper to rent or buy a mooring and a dinghy than it is to rent a slip.

They probably have a 25' minimum. Check out Liberty Marina in Danvers. Down the river a bit but a nice place, reasonably priced and a 19' boat won't have to wait for the bridges so the ride out/in won't be that bad.

BoozeM - I'm in teh same boat. Well, actually a different boat, but I live in Saugus and I'm looking for a slip in the Danvers river as well. In my old boat, I was at Pope's landing for a couple of years, then Riverview, and finally settled at Danversport for a few years until I sold the boat.

My old boat required bridge openings at high tide, since I needed 9 feet. This means that it may take 45 minutes from the time I left my slip until I got out of the no wake area. This year I am downsizing to a 21' walkaround, so I too will get hit with the minimum if I go to Beverly Port Marina, for $3400. Both Liberty and Danversport will run about $700 cheaper than Beverly, but I'm tempted to do Beverly just once so I can see what it's like to be outside of the two bridges. Liberty is a hair cheaper and a little closer, but the facilities are quite nice at Danvers.

I no longer need the amenities of Danversport - we hardly used the restaurant when we were there, and we have a heated pool at home so my daughter doesn't use the pool that much either. So I'm not sure if I should pay the extra for at least one year to try out Beverly, or if I should go to Liberty. I know I disliked the long drive before, but Liberty is a little closer and I no longer have to wait for bridges, but is that 20 minutes worth the $700 more for Beverly?

Ideally I'd love to hear from someone who keeps their boat at each of these places.

Slips are quite expensive, but I found that I use the boat far more than when on a mooring or trailered.

You should consider in /out valet service it is much cheaper. I currently pay $95 per foot for the season compared to $168 - $180 per foot for a slip at the same marina.

That reminds me I need to pay my deposit before I get the boot..

This thread is from a year ago but you may want to investigate a few of the not for profit yacht clubs in the north of Boston area.

East Boston Yacht Club
Jeffries Yacht Club - http://www.jeffriesyachtclub.com/
Cottage Park Yacht Club - http://www.cpyc.org/
Point of Pines Yacht Club - http://www.popyc.org
Fox Hill Yacht Club - http://www.foxhillyachtclub.com/

Swampscott Yacht Club - http://swampscottyachtclub.org

Most clubs have been looking for new members the past few years.

I was at Liberty this year for the first time. Without waiting more then a couple of minutes for the bridges, it was usually about 25-30 min to the no wake zone. I always avoided the holiday weekends, and sat/sun mornings & afternoons. I need 10' clearence. I think it was somewhere between 2 hrs before and after the high tide for that clearence.

I had a different arrangement with them because of my work schedule, so I couldn't give you a price for a whole season. But what I can tell you is that were easy to work with. All the accom. were clean and nice. The people I got know around were real down to earth and had been there a long time. Seemed like everyone was happy there and it is definitly as cheap as you could get.
Pm if you need anyother info

join a yacht club and get on waiting list for slip...think long term . i did it last year bought a mooring for $800 and used the water taxi service provided thru your membership dues.use the $2000-$3000 you saved on fuel . you'll pay thru the nose at the marina...The marina next to the club i joined wants $1450 a year to RENT a mooring 200 yards from mine. you'll get a slip eventually just put your time in and wait it out.

At the end of the day it is all about supply and demand. The more people who need a spot and the number of spots is what it comes down to. In my area you have to be on a waiting list to get to the affordable places. Or you get stuck in an unprotected area or an area with tidal issues.

If you have lots of competition, then you can likely haggle - if there are fewer slips than boats, you're likely screwed.

I was at Danversport in the mid 1980s. Got fed up with the river & the bridges. (With a 27' SR I didn't have to wait to often) Bought my slip at Tuck Point in Beverly Harbor in 1989 & have never looked back. Only make the trip up the Danvers River every 2 or 3 years to haul out for maintenance.

When you are docked in the harbor & look up & see some clouds you think; We'll go out anyway & if it starts to rain we can just come back in. When you are up the river & face almost an hour EACH way to get to open water, then you look at that same sky & stay at the dock.

By the way, a number of our dock mates are refugees from Port Marine. They just couldn't handle the yahoo management over there anymore.

You can buy a mooring in Salem Harbor for a little more than a grand. You'll be all done with it.

$189 per ft ! NUTS
I would have thought north of Boston would be cheaper.
In comparison last year I paid $95 a ft in Quincy
Marina bay is much cheaper than that, especially for a small boat !
Wait till the last minute, this economy most marinas were no where near full the past 3 years.
