There was a good group of harpoon boats that did well this year but the boat that did the best (mid-30s) was a boat from the South Shore. Very good father/son plane/boat combo. If you know the fishery at all you know who that is.

Overall, it was a much better season for the harpoon fleet, way better than anything we have seen since the herring problem began. Much of the season was ruined off Maine, with the weather being dismal for most of July and all of August off Maine. (I have never seen anything like it- you go south of Cape Ann and the weather was good, but get off of Maine and it was completley different weather.) The good thing was that the fish were here, and so if you could get a day you had a chance. I have no doubt we would have either caught the harpoon quota, or come realllly close, if we had even had remotely decent weather in July and August. Amazing what one year without midwater trawlers can do.

The hook fleet did better, too, with some guys really ending on a good note the past few weeks. While I doubt any hook boats got into the mid-30s, there were a lot more fish caught hooking this year. I dont know if you could possibly get mid-30s with the dogs like they are! With that amount of dogfish around, the fact that they caught what they caught showed we had some fish around. Again, amazing what a year without midwater boats can do. Now, if we could just get the damn dogfish under control...

Pauly pulled 22 off that little bite at the Figs over the last couple of weeks. I saw him dragging 3 fish on 2 diff't days by 11 am. The guy is just plain good. Spurge did ok, as did Timmy on the Hot Tuna. The Pratts kicked ass from the stand as twofin said. Didn't hear of anyone else really crushing them sticking tho...

3 fish hooked, how many boats? There are plenty of good fisherman that fly under the radar that unless you are in the game now, or have been in recently that catch as many fish per days fished as those guys. They are commercial guys who fish for what is going to make them money at that given time. I am sure they are happy to sit back and not take credit for catching fish or being a "hiliner" in trade for not having that much attention in the midst of these fleets. I love the hiliner question though. For the record, I am not suggesting that I did well and no one knows about it because I tuna fished once this year for rats on the bank and that was about it for me. I was abused with pictures and phone calls almost daily from the guys who were fishing the last couple weeks. Very painful to be at work and not be able to participate in that. Just for the record I have pretty accurate info and out of the numbers given I think that bannedagain is pretty much on target with the other boats mentioned doing not quite as good as the number he gave.

About NC, 3 bites, how many boats??? were the bites in an eddie or inside the shoals?
