Default DEAD STRIPER SLICK 500 ft. wide and miles long

I know there are a lot more people here that know more than about this by catch situation. I am just a guy who fishes for fun in the Merrimack River and a little in the Ocean. I saw this in a local newspaper and it made me SICK. This past season I saw a 75 year old man get arrested for keeping a striper 2 inches under the limit, so how can people get away with killing this many bass. I thought the fishing was a little slow this year, now I know why. Who is doing this, the mid water trawlers in Glouster that I bought my bait from this season for my 10 lobsta traps. Please tell me I didnt contribute to the killing of these fish. At this rate how many fish will be left in ten years. Where is this video? What can be done about this?

Bingo!!! Yep, that's who did it..... There's more than 1 video too, just do a search on youtube.

But, let's keep all this in perspective to be fair. This is in no way related to the directed commercial fishery for striped bass.

Where is this video?
The 3 mile slick of dead stripers was seen by a groundfish guy from Chatham...he did not get a video of it but sent a letter to the Council telling them about it.

The video you are talking about is on Sportfishermen dot com, in the 'New England Fishing Reports / CT, ME, MA, NH, NY, RI' forum, under the thread name 'Disturbing Video'

(for some reason they wont let me post the link here...or even put the real name of the site...)

...not a slick, per se, but still a lot of dead stripers.

There is a link to the video in the comments on the news article link I posted. If you read the article, what you see is only what he could video in 83 seconds. I thought it says it was longer than 3 miles and 500ft wide. Some dead, some still kicking but dieing 280,000+pds of bycatch. Even if it is only 3 miles, how often does this happen? I mean it doesnt seem like a 1 time thing. I am not very educated on this but I think it is crazy if this is a somewhat usual practice by these people and why is nothing being done. And if something is being done is there anything I can do to help.

I saw the same thing on northern Jeffferys 2 years ago in July only that time it was 2 miles of dead herring. Seems that when they pulled their net it was full of cod and haddock so they dumped the load in order to advoid penalties associated with by-catch hitting the deck. By the time we arrived the groundfish had sunk but a couple boats who arrived soon after the dump gaffed some real nice cod into their boats. The slick of herring was so thick boats were afraid to cross through it out of concern for plugging up their raw water intakes.

This happens much more than we can imagine...why do you think they are fighting so hard against having on board observers.

Fighting hard against on board observers must mean they have something to hide for sure.

You in no way contributed to this atrocity. Its the d-bag commercial fishermen. I'm sure there are a good amount of honest commercial fishermen out there but the are definitely a handful of assholes. A few weeks ago, I found out that there is a very well known commercial captain who is infamous for killing every striper that he pulls up in his nets in protest of the fact that there is no commercial industry for them. I had been fishing for togs earlier that day right by where he keeps his boat. Had I known about this captain earlier, I'd probably be in jail... and it would have been worth it

I hate to see this crap.
I want to blame the system entirely but if that was the case all would be doing it.
Have some respect for other fisherman, the sea, the catch. Christ you don't see farmers disrespecting the land they make their money off, why the hell do some commercial fisherman?
Keep it up, and more regulations will happen...
