I remember seeing first hand around 5-6 years ago east of Chatham out Tuna fishing in October... huge bass on the surface as far as the eye could see... but the Bass were not dead, they were alive, I remember poking at them with the blunt end of a gaff and they would move and flip... they must have been in shock, or the bends ?? from being brought up to the surface quickly from very deep water...I am guessing being caught in pair trawlers nets fishing for herring ?? Sad to see, I remember seeing a few of the Bass recovering and flopping around but most not.
I never rember seeing Herring fishing boats out there during the times I saw this ??

I am sooooo tired of the commercial fisherman taking so many fish and killing our oceans. It's a global problem and this country keeps limiting the recreational fisherman while allowing the commercial guys to harvest tons of fish per day. Pretty soon, it's going to be illegal to keep any fish at all. I say ban all longlines and any type of gill, purse or sane nets.

It ain't the commercial guy . Its the regulations. You wouldn't see any slick or dead fish if the boat was allowed to keep it. It would be food. Not a mess.
