Default Cod fishing Stellwagen Bank

I’m headed up north next week for a Cod charter. Half dozen guys.

From what I understand we are going with 50lb braid and 14 to 18oz jigs.

Any tips on jigging up Cod? I’m totally new to deep water Cod fishing.

Thanks

Jay

Been out 3 times in the last couple of weeks. Getting a ton of Cod and Cusk but there are a bunch of short ones. We were using 12-16 oz jigs with a rubber teaser about 18" above the jig. Most of our fish are coming in 220-270 feet of water. Stay away from bait, the dogfish will kill you but rarely touch the jig. For every keeper we are getting 3-4 shorts. There have been some decent haddock mixed in also. Should have fun.Good luck.

Keep an eye on the weather and plan on using heavier jigs if the wind is stiff and the drift is going to be fast. The ground fishing should be picking up.Good luck.

Use butterfly jigs, you can use a lighter jig as they have less drag, they catch more fish and do not get hung up as often as diamond jigs due to the hook placement.

Went out a couple weeks ago, got over 100 cod between the 2 of us, kept our 10 keepers each. Diamond jig outfished the butterfly jigs. We took off the teaser cause it was catching to many shorts. Calm day so we had on 10 oz. No clams needed. We were in 190' of water, on the mud. Heading back out this weekend.

Was out two Sundays ago (the 21st). Stellwagen was flat as a pond with just a slow swell. We started just north of the SE corner about 150 ft and kept going deeper (East) to about 250 feet and caught NOTHING but 18 DOGS, all on jigs - no bait! Yikes. The fish finder was a dense as I've ever seen it. I can hardly believe that they were all dogfish, but that's all we brought up.

On the other hand we got an amazing whale show and even saw an Ocean Sunfish on the way back near Race Point.

Planning to be out again this Sunday - if anyone has any advice, would love to hear it!

Thanks guys. Oct 8 I'm bouncing bottom. Can't wait for some nice fresh cod. Also Pollck. I know many frown on them but slice some up and eat it Sashimi style and it's all good.

Now what is going to take up the room in my freezer? Bow season started here and CT and I'm ready to drill a couple. Little SOB's jumped in front of my bike 2 blocks from my house. 10,480 in damages not including my 8 G hospital bill for 12hrs of MRI's. Nothing broken but my wallet.

Bambi must die.

Stellwagen trip was a BLAST!

We ran way the hell out. An hr past every other boat we saw. No one was out where this Capt took us. First drop all 6 of us hooked up before it hit the 250 foot bottom. Cod from 5 to 12lbs. then we hit some Pollock grounds and killed. From about 8 to 25 or so lbs. As many as you wanted to reel up.

Started hooking some Red Fish on the teasers. We wanted more so dropped lead with double stacked 4 to 6” plastics 3 feet apart and hammered them.

On our way back in we saw a dozen boats all clumped together. Talked with a few guy’s that were in a couple boats and they didn’t do well at all. Crap in comparison to what we did. I went home with 100lbs of filets and could have taken double that. We left the fish biting and did some whale watching. Saw a bunch. I’ll be going back up there for sure.

Also spotted 2 schools of feeding Tuna but they went down quickly.

Can anyone tell me how to add a picture?
