Random Quote: Honey... I'm going shark fishing on the breakers... Wanna come?
Just moved to the Jersey shore this Spring. This past Saturday I took the boat up Point Pleasant Canal, tooled around Treasure Island, and then back down the canal. I'm looking for a 'cruise' I can take with the family, with a nice destination for getting off the boat for a swim, and then heading back to the marina without it taking the whole day.
The canal... my god that was low-grade torture!
Treasure Island looks promising on a weekday with less people, and Clark's looks like a good place to go for dinner and a cocktail afterwards, but there was nothing pleasant about the Point Pleasant Canal.
One bad experience on the boat and the family is not going to want to go out ever again. Is the canal significantly calmer on weekdays?
I guess it also helps to time the trip to always go with the tide.
yes canal is much calmer on weekdays. there are more restaurants & bars to pull up to beyond clarks landing past the rt 35 bridge. on the bay side there is silver bay which is a ok place to anchor & swim. the "f" cove over by the mantoloking bridge is a good party spot to beach the boat. and if u want to take a cruise , tices shoal is a very nice place to anchor, swim, swim to island beach state park etc...
I live on the canal---some days calm--some days rough--- when you get a couple
of boats going fast it gets nasty in a hurry. Boat traffic is less than half of previous
years IMO
Try The Patio, kid friendly, on the Pt. Pleasant Beach side just East of the railroad bridge. Try Union Landing, Sandbar, Riverhouse on the Manasquan/Brielle side by the rail road bridge.
Are there any restuarants on the water between the Pt. Pleasant canal and the Rt. 37 bridge?
nope.....
And be careful swimming anywhere in the bay from the PP Canal right down to Tices Shoal...............We are infested with stinging jellyfish! Tices is the place to be on the weekends. You can get the boat in there pretty shallow, swim and then walk onto the beach and the ocean side of the beach as well. There will be plenty of people on the weekends. There are a few restaurants on the way as well. The canal is tough on the weekends with the traffic, especially with a good tide. Timing your trip to cross with the tide will cut your trip in half! What sized boat are we talking about? The Lobster Shanty has a place up at the top of the Toms River. Quiet part of the bay for sure. Windows on the bay down in Bayville is louder with bands on the weekend and lots of drinkers.....Stay in the channel.........lots of the bay is 2-3 foot deep..............
There is a restaraunt about 1.5 miles South of the Rt. 37 Bridge on the west side of the bay (just past Good Luck Pint Marina)- sthey have slips (bring your own lines) and they have moorings, grab their line, tie up and their shuttle will get you(use the moorings- much easier.) There is also a Lobster Shanty at the bottom of Toms River (Toms River is the River immediately south of the Rt. 37 Bridge)
Thanks guys. My marina is a stones throw from the Lobster Shanty in the Toms River and I've been to Martell's tiki bar near Good Luck Point a few times. I was looking for something new. I heard there was a place up the forked river but my wife seems to think its a little more upscale than what we're looking for.
Southwind's and Captain's Inn are both good on the Forked River. Kubel's near the Barnegat Lighthouse is also good. And the Duchman's, by the rt. 72 bridge, is worth the ride.
JTG,There is a nice resteraunt at the end of the metedakonk called the pilot house we have tied up there a couple times and thought it was good.If your not lookin to have any drinks you can go to Taylors at Arnolds marina which is just lunch and breakfast.Theres places to go you just have to know the area.Good Luck -Pat L
There is the Pilot House up the Metedeconk....tricky water as you enter the marshes, but enough water if you stay in the channel....plenty of big boats in the marinas back there.
