RE: Finger lakes/Great lakes fishing ?????
Dan, usually by this time of the year and thru Sept. the fishing for Kings on Lake Ontario is at its peak.. You will also often encounter Steelheads out on the vertical temp. breaks.. Lake trout can be had all year, and are often the bread and butter of the charter fleet. For Wally, Erie is the place to head, although there is a real good night trophy fishery for them in and around Oswego Harbor.. For Smalllies, Eries is great, but good numbers are also to be had all along the Lake Ontario shoreline.. I usually would locate them by trolling crankbaits along the 1st. dropoff untill I contacted a good number, then would stop and cast.. Your boat is really not capable of dealing with Salmonids on the big lakes, (except for possibly at ice out/early spring when the Browns blitz the shoreline), but you could certainly get into some Bass, Pike, Wallys etc. IF you pick your days carefully.. Check out the Fairhaven, NY area, as it offers access to Little Sodus Bay, (mostly warmwater species in the warmer months) which you can likely fish most days from your small boat, and if conditions permit you could sneak outside to the lake. I mostly take my own boats up, but used "Screwy Louie's" Charter service out of Fairhaven a time or 2 and feel he is as good as most..
As for the Fingers, my 1st choice for Bass and Walleyes would be Honeoye.. Jammed with Bass (30+ days are very common for me) , plenty of Wallys, and some of the biggest Bluegills and panfish I've ever seen. Honeoye is the smallest of the Finger lakes, and is well suited to your boat.. For Trouts I would look towards Kueka or Seneca, but both are much larger, so you may be limited in your 14 footer..
If it where me, I would consider Chartering for a day or two, but also bring the 14' and use it to hit some of the smaller waters..
In short (too late now), I would say Hell Yea its worth a trip!
