Default sea tow vs boat us

I am sure this has been debated 1000's of times already.

Which of these offshore towing insurance services (sea tow vs boatus) does the group feels does a better job? Boating area I use is from Newburyport, MA to East Port, ME.

Pricing looks about the same. I can't find a web page showing where the seatow franchises are located. Boat us franchises look convient to where I fish just don't understand the 25 mile limitation they mention.

Any customer service or response time or hidden fees issues with either?

Thanks for the feed back

Go with whichever one is closer but it really doesn't matter. If you have one service you can use the other service and get reimbursed with no hassels.

Both services are good, but one may be better/more active in your area than the other, so ask other around your area.

In re your 25 mile limitation question, it is my understanding that unless you have BoatUS's "Unlimited" service, your towing membership will only cover you for a tow that is no more than 25 miles from wherever they pick you up to where you want to go. Their Unlimited service costs more and is just that - it you are more than 25 miles offshore, your Unlimited membership fee covers that tow job.

I GO WITH THE UNLIMITED FROM TOW BOAT I THINK ITS ABOUT $150 A YEAR. DEFF WORTH IT. THEY WILL TOW YOU FROM THE CLOSEST PORT BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME OUT OF. IVE USED THEM 2 TIMES IN 2 YEARS. ONE TOW WAS ABOUT 19 MILES AROUND $800 OR SO WITH OUT THE MEMBERSHIP OTHER WAS ABOUT 5 MILES AND AROUND $250. DEFF WORTH IT IN MY BOOK. CHEAP INSURANCE WHEN NEEDED.

I agree with everyone else about whatever tow company is closer. The towing company I'M with is SEA/TOW due to the fact that they will tow you back from the canyons if necessary Boat/US will not.

My boat insurance covers towing don't know how much extra it cost but it will reembursed me up to 7K and thats the only way to go for me bacause I go far off shore an seatow and boat us won't go out that far. So call up your insurance company and ask for a rate quote

Sea Tow locations can be found at this link: http://seatow.com/about/locations.asp

In the area the OP mentions I can't imagine going far enough offshore that a Sea Tow boat won't come get you, but if you go that far, I would call the local towing operation and ask about where they are willing to send their boats. My boats regularly go to Stellwagen Bank and beyond to assist boats.

Jdizzle, make sure that you are clear on how the towing rider on your insurance works. Getting reimbursed for a tow may count as a claim and can effect your rates upon renewal. Also, Sea Tow members get service before anyone else.

If Sea Tow Or Boat Us will not tow you from the distances you go........... who will?

My Boat US policy covers me up to 50 miles offshore.

I have had to use them once when a water pump crapped out and they where to my boat in an hour and towed me back to My home port.

Thanks for the link to the seatow locations. I do a lot of boating in Penobscot bay and didn't see any service providers north of Portland. Is that accurate?

Fishhawk, definitely contact Sea Tow Portland to ask that question. I am pretty sure they keep a boat farther east than Portland.

I looked up which Sea Tow was the closest, and then contacted the guy directly. I asked a bunch of questions like "What happens if I break down just off Ptown?" and "what happens if I break down off Manchester" etc. I asked the same thing from BoatUS. I liked the Sea Tow answers betetr, and went with them.
If you break down on memorial day weekend or the 4th of July, there may be a long wait regardless of the color of the boat. The one time I had to use Seatow I was happy with the service.

Sea Tow Portland Maine is top notch by the way, I HIGHLY recommend them, great great guys and top notch service. I called them in October, when I was 18 miles offshore, they were there in an instant.

Last time I was in West Marine they asked me to sign up for tow boat us coverage, I said, do you guys have any boats in Portland? The store manager didnt even know if they had the service in Portland but wanted to sell it to me anyway, I said no thanks!

This is just a hair off topic but while we are here... I think most insurance policies have some provisions for towing reimbursement. Hell, even if you don't have that rider, if you only need a tow once every 10-15 years and it costs 1000.00 you'd about break even. So why pay for a tow service? You pay for opne for the very reason stated in Ethans last sentence.

Trust me. I had an engine fire one day a few years back on the way home from Stellwagen. I was 15 miles out. After dealing with the fire, plus a leak right at water line which had me taking on water (and exhaust boot burned up at the waterline), dealing with the CG and looking at a 3 hour tow at 5 mph, the LAST thing I needed in my day was to wait for them to come get me after all the paying members were serviced. I have no idea when I may have gotten taken care of. Instead Ethan was there within 30 minutes after the call and I simply had to flash him my yellow card.

Everyone needs a tow eventually. I am brutal about safety and maintenance and it was a shocker for me to need one. You have two choices. You can pay now a little each year have the peace of mind of some having your back, or pay all at once when you need it and worry and wait when each time you go out and even worse when the time comes.

Back on topic I am a SeaTow fan, but as stated about, the best choice is a company who services your area. It makes no sense to buy a SeaTow plan if your area is crawling with Boat US and they will get to you faster. I do know that Ethan pulls guys in from past Stellwagen and I am not so sure you'd get that coverage with Boat US Never looked into their programs scien they aren't the primary service where I boat

If you're boating out of Newburyport go with Tow Boat US as I don't believe SeaTow operates out of the Merrimack any longer. Besides they do a great job too.Regards,

I believe Sea tow insures any boat the card holder owns while Tow Boat USA only will offer service if the owner who is a member is on the boat. My #3 son owns the boat, if I go out without him and I have Tow Baot Im not covered, with Sea Tow, the boat is covered regardles if he is on board. Check this out.

I called them a couple of years ago and they said the only service Chatham's south side. I would not want to wait for them anyway. Ryders cove has towed me and there rates are reasonable. I would rather give them the business.
