Default Hudson River Fishing Advice

As a Rookie northeast fisherman, can you guys help with what baits work best on the Hudson , and what species I might target as an easy way to break into the "catch" part of fishing? Also what rod and reel combos are best,, I'm used to Dolphin, kingfish , and grouper, snapper fishing in South Fla. Likely i will fish the area near Norrie Point.

I would like to see what people have to say.
Water is pretty dirty in this area right?

Striper season is right around the corner! Norrie point area is the place to be, may take awhile to learn the ropes, don't give up. Trolling with Rappalas, drifting with bloods, anchoring with chunk herring, live herring. Lots of ways to catch'em. Learn the secrets and the places to be. Large and small mouth bass are around also. Seeing where you've been fishing and the species, Your probably gonna be bored to death up here. Where your at it's considered freshwater also. I spend my striper season from beginning of May to beginning of June here and then I will be going to the LI Sound down around Mammaroneck to hit the Stripers again. More aggressive down there. You might like Lake Ontario for Salmon. Traveling sucks but that's where the fish are. I use Okuma line counter reels with Okuma 7.5" trolling rods. I also use two Cannon downriggers when trolling the Norrie area.Good luck.

I would look at the Hudson River Fishermans site hrfanj.com and also boating on the hudson. John Vargo runs Boating and has been fishing the river his whole life.
If I was going up now I would be fishing the flats behind Croton Point, or the flats between the TZ and Piermont pier. Right now light gear for the schoolies, but in a few weeks as the hering show the switch would be to hering and heavier gear.
I use 10 pound now and 20+ in a few weeks.
Good luck.
