My wife and I do our boating in coastal North Carolina, so when we took the ferry across Delaware Bay last summer, we were venturing into uncharted territory. I was intrigued by references we heard to "the rockpile" and also wondered if someone could fill me in on the history behind the stone jetties located in what seemed like the middle of the bay. Are they what the rock pile is all about? Thanks for any local knowledge you can share.

I am from the Cape May side of Delaware Bay - not sure what you are referring to.
In the bay itself is a very large breakwater just outside Lewes DE - protects that whole area around Lewes. I think that is what you are referring to. You would see that on the ferry crossing to Cape May.
Or, a few miles offshore is an area called the Old Grounds. It's an area where old commercial sailing vessels dropped their rock ballast after the crossing, prior to entering the shallower Delaware Bay. Lots of ballast rock on the bottom - good fishing area. Can only see those rocks if you are a diver.
