IfI were to go to Montauk this weekend, what are the odds that I could find some harbor seals to look at? I see there are guided seal walks, but none this weekend.
Does anybody have any suggestions on where to go, park etc...I've never been to Montauk and was just looking for something to do.
And how's the ferry from New London? I would be taking a car on it.
I can't comment on the seals either, but I have done the ferry from New London to Orient Point and it was very easy. I actually trailered my boat that I bought on Long Island onto the ferry and drove it home to Massachusetts. This time of year it shouldn't be too crowded. If you do a google search you should be able to find them. I think the way it works is that you make a reservation with a credit card and pick up the tickets at the office there before you board. It was a great ride with many light houses to look at. Have fun.
I went years ago and took one of the guided walks. It started by the lighthouse and they took you along the beach on the north side of the light to a spot where the seals were hauled out on the rocks. I don't remember how far the walk was but it wasn't that close to the light. We saw about 40 seals there. If I remember correctly the walks were scheduled to occur at low tide when the rocks were more exposed and the seals more likely to be on them. The lighthouse is at a state park and you can park right there.
I took the ferry from New London last year, it's a nice trip. I think the company is cross-sound ferry service, you can make a reservation online. The ferry brings you to Orient though and it's a long drive around to Montauk. I think you may be able to take another ferry across to Sag Harbor from the north fork but I am not familiar with that.
You can pick up the ferry in Greenport to Shelter Island.....drive south across it....then take a 2nd ferry to Sag Harbor. Each ferry ride is only 5-10 minutes, this will save you some driving. No reservations are needed for these boats either.
You can drive down toward the beach on the north side just past the refreshment stand. (You need a permit, but don't let that stop you).
Then walk westward to a rocky point. I think the key is doing it when there is a south breeze. If it is from the north the water sprays on the rocks and they don't seem to like that.
Go to Cupsogue in Westhampton. Park in the lot and walk to Moriches bay on the NE east corner of the lot. There will be about 200 of them. Maybe someone here can confirm the sighting.I have not been around there lately.
Park at lighthouse. Walk the north side to the area known as Stepping Stones, best if you go at low tide. The people in the concession stand can probably direct you.
