Cape May area waters, looking to check up on an anchored bud down there
Ok so I got some news last night on a guy who lived aboard an old 35' sailboat in my mooring area last summer, and with whom I had a few cocktails with. Anyways, this guy-Joey, set sail early November to head south, with minimal provisions, a non-running engine, minimal gear, and minimal experience as well. I heard he made it to Newport (with some amusing stories), now I hear he made it to Cape May, I believe the CG "assisted" him and he's "anchored" not to far from the CG station, for the winter! Not envious of that situation, but figured if anyone's still fishing the area, maybe they could get in touch with him for me. I can't imagine, having no money, no job, and living on the hook like that in anything other than a warm climate. Not to mention the legality of it, but I'm guessing the CG "suggested" he stay put till spring. Hopefully this thread will get the guy some donations or something, I did hear something about frostbite as well..... I also heard a scalloper asked him if he wanted some work, but the guy didn't want him as he's unexperienced as a deck hand. Someone say hi to Joey and his cat for me. lmfao

I actually don't find this amusing at all. The guy needs to grow up and get a job. The Coasties now have to worry about this clown and probably risk their own necks to save him at some point. He set sail with no experience and what sounds like an I'm betting there is little or now safety equipment on board and it's out o date.
The rest of us will have to foot the bill for whatever fiasco he creates either in terms of a rescue or a fuel spill from sinking. No pity from me, I work too damn hard to run a safe boat and keep the burden of doing so off anyone but myself.

Geez mcleaves, lighten up!
Since I can't edit/delete my message- the guy's a retired postal worker (insert joke here) fulfilling his dream on a shoestring budget. Safety equipment is up to date, and he does have sailing experience, albeit local. Chart and compass navigation with a handhelp gps for backup is how he set out, with plans to get as far south as he could. And I didn't say the CG had to rescue him, just that they assisted in some way. As a forum member here I just figured I could tap the resources to see if a forum member down near a Cape May CG station could say hi to the guy for me and maybe we could figure out how to get the guy a case of beer and a meal on my tab. To the bilge I guess....................

We can only comment on what you posted. From your post it sounds like he left in a derelict boat with no experience and no funds to deal with issues that were SURE to arise and I'm supposed to feel bad? Everyone has dreams, donsn't mean you should chase them.
I was suggesting he is GOING to get into trouble and the CG is going to have to deal with him. If he gets caught out there in a storm with no engines and has to cut sail he's going to be issuing a mayday.
This is just stupid venture. Either that or you should repost the facts. Being retired and doing something dumb doesn't mean we should applaud or enable the guy. It's one thing to get into something and have things go wrong, it's quite another to do head out on this kind of journey ill equipped in skill, money and physical resources.
