There's no additional fee, when you renew or apply, just indicate 10 pot and diving, mine was still just 40 bucks.

I woulkd throw this out to you. Seeing you are going to need traps the best way and cheapest is to buy used. Every now and the the commerical guys will rotate thier stock of traps as they do not want to spend to much time repairing them on the water. Check out the ads here you might find someone who is seeling close to your area. I got mine 6 years ago and they are still working fine. Do yourself a favor when buying traps. Do not buy the 4 footers. They are heavy on land but let them sit and get some growth on them and they become twice as heavy.

http://www.lobstermen.com/BuySellSwappage1.html

You are also going to need a permit. Down load this page and fill it out and send it out.

http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dmf/comme...obster_app.pdf

While you are out getting your bouys and lines. Pick up a lobster gauge that is made for your area. There is a minimum and maximum size in areas. In my area any lobster with a 5 inch body or bigger needs to go back. They make guages with the min. and max. on them. Also when you do catch a lobster. Make certain you turn it over and look at the tail. If you see a " V " cut into one of the flippers throw it back. This " V " notch indicates that the lobster has been caught before and had eggs at the time. The " V " shows that the lobster is a breeder.

On top of the gauges, make sure you check the exit hole dimensions to make sure they are valid in your state.

For example, I bought pots in MA and come to find out the exit vent dims are smaller that what is mandated here in RI. I got fined for this one because I didn't know any better

Gotofish thanks for adding that. I forgot about other persons in other states. That might be getting traps from Mass. fishermen.
I only listed for persons that might be fishing in Mass. waters. Seeing the author of this thread is going to be going out of Green Harbor in Marshfeild, Ma.

Be sure to set your pots in among the pots of commercial guys who have been doing it for years. That will make it easier for them to cut your lines.

Who is allowed to set traps where? I seen lobster boats pulling traps next to the break water in Plymouth and I know they go out into deeper waters.

If you dive near lobster traps don't be suprised if a lobsterman doesn't go out of his way to avoid you.

This could be the dumbest or greatest idea in the world?????? What if you got a waterproof pad lock or a totally plastick one and used them on the traps?? Im sure you could have them custom made to use one key if you ordered enough. It would take a few extra second to open but it would pay for itself in no time because no more trap pickers!!!

I still like the exploding dye pack method. every trap is checked by a few different people and I bet some of those traps are never seen again.
Do any divers ever find abandoned traps with no ropes tied to a bouy?

is there a permit just for lobster diving recreationaly or does the 10 trap permit cover that. Where am I allowed to drop 10 traps, only state waters, within 3 miles?
The diving permit allows you ten traps. I got one bug last year, so my wife referred to it as the $40 lobster.

Your answer should have been "No, I spent $40 to get 1 free lobster"

If the bug was under 2.5 lbs, a lobster dinner would of been cheaper.

I tried it for the first time last year. I did OK, but it was pretty time consuming because I caught all of the trap bait (It is a great excuse to go out - "sorry honey, I can't go shopping...I have to go pull the traps and catch dinner - you go without me")

It was also very messy! I used a large commercial doormat over the gunnel and pulled the traps by hand.

I bought my traps from a local lobsterman. I had to make some repairs, but at 5 or 10 bucks a trap it was worth a little effort. I quickly learned that you do not need all the bricks. I usually used only 2 or 3 bricks. The current ran fairly well in the area. I had my share of poaching and lost pots. It sucks that CT only gives you 10 tags and then you have to order 10 new tags if you lose a pot or two. They tell you that if you order 1 new set you may get checked, and if you order the second set that you will get checked. I told them to get their butts out here more often because poaching is a problem for myself and the guys on my dock. The biggest pain is switching all those tags when you are bad weather and close to the rocks.

I think that you can only put traps in the areas designated as state waters in your state. I like to keep mine close to the marina since I go out and pull them a couple of times a week.

I did pretty well last year. I definitely made my money back from gas, license fees, gear, etc.

I could have written this post verbatim!!! I'd also add that I bought 4' commercial traps used and will probably spring for the 3 footers this year. Too bulky to pull and store by hand if you want to move them around.

how tough is it to haul traps either big or small by hand? Or is it better to use a electro/hydralic hauler with davit? Just want to know what my options are.

I pull my recreational traps by hand not that bad but it is a dirty job. Shit grows on the rope and you never know what will spill out of the trap. It is worth the effort because it is fun and fresh lobster rocks.
