OK, I am going to ask a stupid question, so go easy on the flaming.. How can something caught in federal waters be a state record? I mean you could haul it into the state with the lowest competitive record if you do that right?
I admit to not knowing the rules behind record setting so I really am just curious how this works.

Congrats on the shark, but it may be the record for a VERY long time.
The NMFS has added porbeagles to it's proposed list of prohibited species for next year. You can the details of the changes at their website. They very well may be no-take fish before long.

I feel like I'm asking the question that nobody wants to answer, or wants to know the answer to. I mean no disrespect to the feat.. That is one hell-uv-a fish. Just want to know how it becomes a STATE record.
I was tuna fishing south of block island this weekend and caught what at the time was a mako. A closer look lead me to believe I was mistaken. Never one to spend much time shark fishing, I soon realized that my mako might be a fako. I made a call and found out there was one really good way to tell them apart. The porbeagle's teeth give it away. There are two small denticles on the base of each tooth. My shark had them, besides small white dots on the trailing edge of the dorsal fin.
Tail that was starting to crescent. It weighed 445lbs, back at Moriches inlet NY. There is no state record slot in NY or RI that I can find for the Porbeagle. Pix posted in sportfishermen.com big game forum. Caught on Flouro 200lb and live bait gama hook, bait was live bluefish. Truly a powerful fish. Pulled like a GBT. Had no idea the IGFA record is 507lbs.
It looks like u can't mention another website without being edited. The pix is on another sportfisherman website. I coudn't figure out how to upload on this one. Admin please don't censor me. Not cool. U guys are still the best site for somethings.
