I think watch hill to block is 12 nm. Mystic is maybe 3-5 nm from watch hill (at most).

My guess it's only 2-3 nm across the sound to the north side of fishers.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the best place to launch a trailerable boat for a trip to Block Island?

Or Hanson's Landing (top of the salt pond) Nice ride through the pond, well marked too

Charlestown breachway gives you a short ride to block, can be difficullt when the current is running hard. Barn Island has a very good launch, a short ride to Watch Hill then out to block. If I had some good help to load the boat I would go to Charlestown, Barn Island if I was taking the family. What harbor are you planning on going into, old or new? Groton is about a 26 nm mile run to the new harbor(west side of the island), about an hour in fair conditions depending on your boat. Make sure you watch the weather in BI sound before you head out, conditions can change in a hurry. Watch out for the fog, there is a lot of boat traffic out there, if you don't have radar.

Radar? I've been biting my tongue since this thread started, not trying to sound like a smart azz, but if you had to ask the "distance" question I'm assuming you have neither a paper chart nor a handheld gps, either of those two would have answered the distance question. So, I'm gonna suggest picking up one or the other before you make the trip. Good luck!

Seeing how the original poster is from Miami, FL I would not necessarily suspect that they would have a paper chart of RI/NY/CT.

Seems like a legitimate question to me - why not tap the knowledge of the locals to the area.

Geez, I read the Miami thing as well jack. Don't need you to highlight the guy's internet forum signup address location in bold so I can read it again. Sure the question's legit. But so is advice to get a chart or pick up a handheld if planning on making the trip. Asking directins to head offshore at the boat ramp can get you in trouble. Heck even Mapquest would have answered the simple distance thing, and you're giving me crap for suggesting navigational aids for the guy?

I miss that place! I used to take my 16' WAHOO! to Fishers Isalnd all the time. Don't know the miles but you can see the island from Mystic. I can't be more than 2 miles from shore.

I also took my WAHOO! to Block Isalnd once from Mystic. Going over was a dream, coming home was one of the scariest days on a boat. Never again without a 50' boat!

Name is not Jack. So if the question is legit, why not answer it; which you did not do?

Not giving you crap for your suggestions, just pointing out that the guy is not local and may not have a chart - yet.
