I've decided to put my 24' Osprey on a trailer and fish out of Centerville, MA this season. Until the bait comes back to the Gulf of Maine, I see no need to keep chasing the GBFT any longer. Can anyone offer info on a good spot to push a boat off that provides ample parking for overnight should we make a canyon run? I'm dtermined to fish some warm waters for a change!
Re: boat ramps with parking on south side of Cape Cod
Thats a big run in a 24. I think they may hassle you overnight in Harwich. If you have outboards you could probably leave it at Barn Hill Lane in Chatham overnight. I don think they would hassle you. These are probably best if you want to fish out east though.
Re: boat ramps with parking on south side of Cape Cod
I'm looking to leave my car and trailer at the launch while I'm on the water. I figure if I make a canyon run I would be leaving at noon the first day and returning after dark on day two.
I have a diesel that burns 4.5 gals an hour at 24 - 26 mph (cruise) and with 150 gal tank (standard on the Osprey 24' Fisherman) I can easily make the run and back no problem. I have 4 person raft, epirb, off-shore flare kit and 3 survival suits. Heck we been fishing out of Newburyport (cold water) and have put 180 - 200 miles on many day trips.
Is there a spot in the Hyannis area that lets you park your car and trailer for a couple days?

Try Bass River Beach, or Smuggler's as it is often called on South Shore Drive in South Yarmouth. Parking is $10 day unless you buy a seasonal pass for $50 or $75 a year I think. I work for the police Department, you'll be fine, we're too busy to care how long a truck is parked at the beach. Ramp is great, immediate access to the Sound, you'll like.
Re: boat ramps with parking on south side of Cape Cod
Hello Hooper,
Much thanks! That's sound ideal and is a fairly short drive from Centerville where I'll be leaving the boat at Mom's place when not fishing. Who would I contact about a season pass for this location?
Re: boat ramps with parking on south side of Cape Cod
Hooper's suggestion is the best option. It puts you 100 yards from open water. Plenty of parking, and affords you the comfort of knowing he will be looking over your truck and trailer while on the water. Be sure to get some solid info. before going to the canyons. It's possible to burn a lot of fuel and waste a lot of time looking for the bite. I'd suggest a SAT phone to go along with the safety gear. Good Luck
Re: boat ramps with parking on south side of Cape Cod
Thanks Tunabomber! Not a bad idea having a sat phone. I haven't priced them but will check it out. I'll certainly do some research prior to the canyon run. I've never fished south of P-town and look forward to learning some new waters.

There is a loosely knit group of us who have been fishing east of Chatham the past few years for SBFT's and it is a good time, good fishing. Canyon style fishing close to home.....It is always good to have another who is willing to post or PM with info!
Re: boat ramps with parking on south side of Cape Cod
Hooper,
Certainly look forward to meeting you and some of the group. I will be moving the boat down from Portsmouth this Thursday. Probably will be launching at Barnstable Harbor and poke around a bit for some macks and see where the Bass may be starting to show on the Bay side.
