I have my boat docket in Princes Bay, Staten Island. I am going down to LBI in July for a week. I was thinking of running the boat down there rather than putting it back on the trailer and trailering it.
Whose has done this run? How many miles is it? I will probably fish a few choice spots along the way so I am not worried about length of time or average crusing speed ...
I have not traveled on the inside much so I would most likely opt to stay outside for the whole trip and cut in at Barnegat Inlet.
Also can anyone recommend a transient marina or slip for the week on LBI in or close to Barnegat Inlet -- most likely the last week of July 28- Aug 4.
It's about a 40 mile run from Sandy Hook to BI. Not bad on a good day. Leave early for the best ride. You prefer to stay outside, but you can cut inside at Manasquan Inlet which is about 20 miles from the Hook if the wind picks up. The afternoon winds are predominently south to south east putting you into a head sea or just off the bow. If you run to BI, do not cut between the outer marker and the jetty. The jetty is submergered in between the two and you will not make it across.
I would suggest picking up a chart for the area. Maptech has one that shows Sandy Hook to AC that includes the ICW from Manasquan to AC.
We usually rent in North Beach or Loveladies. However, this year we were not going to go on account of my wife being pregnant, but last minute we started looking into it.
I am familar with the north and south jetties -- I have fished on them for years. I have the Captain Seagulls charts. I think I could probably pickup time if I travel inside at a 30 mph cruise if the bay is claim. At best I'll do 18-20 mph on the oceanside.
How big a boat? Travelling inside will probably cost an additioanal 1-2 hours with the slow zones from the canal just about all the way to Mantoloking Bridge.
It only takes 45 minutes on a bad day(weekend mid-day) to get from Manasquan inlet to the Montoloking bridge if you stay on the ICW. If you go around the Bayhead NO Wake you can save only 5 miuntes. I only stay on the "Go Fast Side" if I am out for a joy ride. After you pass the Mantoloking bridge you only have to slow down for the 37 bridge/Seaside Bridge (Mathis Bridge). On a good summer weekend you will find the Barnegat Bay much rougher then the ocean. We can them "Benny Bumps". And you be the Benny.

With my bad luck I always go against the current in the canal
I made this run down to Manahawkin. Make sure you have a good chart or chip for your GPS. In a 20ft if it is semi rough you may want to go thru the Manasquan Inlet. Once you get through the slow zone you can really cruise along.
My biggest piece of advise is to have a back up plan if the weather turns bad the last days of you trip. This happened to me and it was not pleasant. In fact I had to wait hours to get out of the Squan inlet. Even the 40fter's weren't leaving. There was an strong east wind and the swells were 6-8 ft plus.
Other than that if your prepared it should be a nice enjoyable trip.
I am doing it again in a few weeks to bring my boat down to Seaside permanantly.
I kept my 20' CC in barnegat bay for years and regularly made runs out of Manasquan Inlet to Raritan Bay and out MI down to Barnegat Inlet. In normal weather conditions this is doable without a second thought. Check the weather before you go. Good advice is leave early as the normal south winds will kick up the ocean.
Weather permitting I would personally run it outside the whole way - it'd be much quicker.
Going in M.I. and running thru Barnegat will take much longer - the inlet alone was always a PITA for me - the usual heavy boat traffic and rough conditions at the mouth made it a white knuckle affair getting inside most of the time. The numerous no wakes (at the RR/Rt 35 bridge, canal, Lavalette, Mantaloking and Seaside bridges) and the canal take forever.
I think I will do it. Now i just have to find a slip for a week. Does anyone know of a marina (with reasonable rates)? Or perhaps a house with a canal that would rent me their dock for the week?
if you come through manasquan inlet & through the canal, you will see a gas dock ( dales marina) i believe there may be a transient slip there . better than the manasquan river you will need not be concerned about the tide change & you can walk to everything including a b&b
I slip my boat at Causeway Marina which is adjacent to the causeway onto LBI. I assume they have transient slips. It's a large well protected marina with the best gas price on the Island. If you are interested here's the number.... 609-494-1371. Tell 'em Jack the Tastykake guy refered you.
Easy. I see the bridge, the island to the left and I grew up on that bay. My parents live facing north around the corner. Small world. With that channel getting skinny I had to move my boat some years ago, and then sold it after a relocation to PA. Thinking about dropping one in their open slip again. Time will tell. Enjoy the summer and the jet skis!

Great place to grow up huh, a little piece of paradise! It's my parent's house, now I bring my 5 year old down as much as possible. Those jetskis though, I've seen too many accidents with them in front of the house.
