HDS & Platinum
I used the Platinum card for the first time in an HDS unit today.
What seems a little strange is the depth numbers are not
right reading to the bow of the boat (Heading mode). They
are kind of all over, sideways, upsidedown, etc. (see picture).
Is this normal? In north up mode the depth numbers are all
right reading. This same chart card reads correctly in the non
HDS Lowrance unit I have.

I talked with Navionics this morning. Ther belief is it's a Lowrance problem,
even though Navionics did all the software development. They were supposed to get back to me but have not. Still hope to get a response
from Navionics on this blog.
Also talked to Lowrance engineering. They were not aware of the problem but are
now. They could not give a time frame but hoped to have a software fix in the next
few weeks, but it may have to wait for the next major update(did I hear ughh!!).
Anyway it will be fixed. Guess I will wait to buy that Navionics Platinum Plus now.
But those Lowrance Nautic maps are really nice.

Its not a Lowrance problem, its a Navionics/Lowrance problem since the HDS compatibility project is a joint effort. I beleive this issue has been corrected with software version 2.1 that was just released this week. You should also notice faster re-draw. download from the Lowrance website.

I agree.
Can't believe this has not become a big issue on the main electronics
board.
I was ready to buy a Platinum Plus but makes no sense unless
Navionics solves this problem. Some very nice features but looking at
this stuff up side down is just plain wrong. Sure wish they would show
a little interest. They could at least put something on their website
saying they see this issue and it will be solved, with a projected date.
All I got from a phone call to Navionics was use the card in "north up"
mode. Thanks for that!
Oh well the Lowrance built in charts are nice and the NauticPath chart
card works as it supposed too.

Hi Mate,
There is a big issue with compatibility with the HDS units and P+ Charts.
I have a HDS 10 and cannot get the P+ for the UK to run at all.
Lowrance and Navionics are aware of the problem and supposed to be working on a fix. I am running an old Gold card at the present. But this also has the issues with the text on its side or upside down.
As you say, it would be better if they both recognized the fact, and keep the customer informed.
All the best
Steve

Now that is strange. Except for the up side down problem, The
Navionics Platinum card is good. But I have a Gold card that will
not work at all in the HDS, but works fine in everything else.
Go Figure?
I will give Lowrance credit. I have talked to them and they have been
responsive, but it is really a Navionics problem and it is Navionics who
seem to be slow to respond (or at least inform).
Nothing really we can do. I hope they get together soon and figure this
out. I brought it up the first time on May 19. Chart cards are expensive
little items not to be used. And I'm not using my Navionics cards now.

The "heading up" feature is the issue. North up is fine. I know both teams are aware of this (I too wonder why it wasn't fixed). But really, the chart is more that readable in the screen shot above (it look pretty damn good I think). This flipping of the numbers is something other chart makers (Raster chart and some Vectors) have had for many years. I would hardly suggest it ruins the usefulness of the product. You can always run in North up mode.
I caught 3 30#+ Stripers last weekend with the "upside down" numbers. The fish don't seem to care.
It will be addressed. What everyone needs to hold onto is the fact that the new HDS units are doing things with Cartography that has never been done before, and aside from some growth pains, the mapping is light years ahead in appearance and functionality compared to the competitors stuff. Its just going to get better. Both companies are working hard at this. As far as Navionics not being responsive, we are helping develop the platform, but have no control over update releases.
The mapping, even with the upside down numbers in one configuration, is unreal.

Guess we all have opinions. Mine will remain a bit different from yours,
at least until this issue is solved.

Just so there isn't any confusion...I want it to be perfect too, and I am a much tougher critic than almost everyone (those who know me will confirm).
My point is, the product does not qualify as "bad". Sometimes these boards tend to get a little out of hand.
Again, given where we were 30 days ago, I am VERY happy with the performance of the HDS mapping.

I agree with both your points. Navionics has a fantastic product,
as does Lowrance with it's HDS.
Just this one issue that I'm sure will be solved.
Please keep us customers posted!
Thanks
