Default need fishing advice

hi all. Hubby and I just got our boat and have been taking it out (not far, lol) to get used to it.

Our marina is in middle river (all star marina). We leave out of there with the kids and normally go near hartmiller island and carroll island, drop anchor and let the girls fish a little (ages 7 and 10). This past weekend we caught some spot and white perch.

I am totally new to this, want to buy some more stuff for the boat for fishing and need some advice.

This past weekend we used bloodworms and squid, but the girls won't bait the lines with the bloodworms. I would like to try some lures but have no clue what to get any advice?

I like to shop without hubby cause he can be tight so I want to go to the boat store and pick up some things but need advice on what to get so any info. would be appreciated! Thanks in advance,

Angel

Oh, also, any good areas to fish near where we're at when we don't have the kids and want to do some more serious fishing? And what types of bait /lures are good?

The fake blood worms work well and shouldn't be any trouble for your kids to use. Looks like thin strips of bubble gum.

I use the shad rigs to cast to breaking fish.

Bookmark the DNR fishing report, too:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries...chesapeake.asp

Please let your kids know that bluefish (even small ones) have very sharp teeth.

For perch, you can also use frozen clam "snouts" (steamer clam necks) very effectively.

What Drum Bay said- Gulp! offers fake bloodworms, kids might not mind using that. Look like red worms with glitter on them, can find them pretty much anywhere(dicks, local shops...) ALot of the Gulp! products seem to work well along with some Powerbaits too. Really for perch or spot you can even use plain old worms and let them sit nder a bobber. Alot of kids dont mind doing that. Also try softcrabs cut into quarter size pieces, personly i would rather eat them myself though.

If you can get out in the bay and find birds diving and breaking fish, normally blues and rockfish, you can pretty much throw them anything. Rattletraps, bucktails, Bass Assasins, storm lures...the list goes on. While at the breaking fish youll deffinitely get action it might be alittle too much for your aged kids, just a thought.

Also, How have you liked Allstar so far?

For fake bloodworms, we use Fishbites "Bag O Worm" available almost everywhere they sell bait. As DrumBay described - they look like strips of bubblegum that you cut and put on the hook.

Fish bites, grass shrimp, squid, I just started the kids 5&7 on stripers just on the mouth of the magothy. anchor, drop a bag of chum over the side and bottom rig with strips of manheden. ALWAYS keep a light rob rigged with 1-2 oz shiney silver lure with or without a tail. When you see the gulls diving into the water cast right at them you will get a fish every cast!!! Or use a buck tail cast into them let it hit bottom and jig for the big ones!!

You dont have to buy everything all at once. I get something new every now and then when I stop for bait, hooks, weights, I buy the lowest priced light rods at k-mart each year $7. I get the reels off ebay no more then 15-30 each. And buy bulk once you get going.

Fishbites work well when the water is warm, but now with the Bay cooling off, they will become less effective.

Another bait that works well is cooked shrimp. Buy a bag of the cheapest frozen cocktail shrimp you can find at Giant, Superfresh, or Grauls. Every time yo go fishing, throw a few in a ziplock bag and take em with you.

Cut the shrimp into pieces and thread them on a circle hook and you'll catch just about any fish that is in the area. One 2# bag of shrimp lasts me almost all season.

Another place to get local fishing information is over at Tidalfish.
http://www.tidalfish.com/boards2/

Go to Chesapeake Angler - The Original Board and read away! You'll get fishing reports, gear advice, and lots of good-natured 'banter'...

Finally, consider hiring a local fishing guide for the day. You will learn more about gear, technique, and places to fish in one day with a guide than you could ever hope to learn by going it alone.

Two guides that work the waters of your area are Capt Tom Hughes and Captain Skip Slomski. You can learn about both of them here:

http://www.capttomhughes.com/
http://www.gofishbaltimore.com/

Good luck!
