Default Fishing near Solomons

I've been fishing out of Solomons this summer, mostly catching croaker and spot, but only a few on any given day. I usually anchor up and use bloodworms with some weight to stay down near the bottom.

Any thoughts on improving my catch? Will a chum slick attract more or different fish - or do I maybe just need to find some better spots? Would I do better to drift?

Anyone catching any flounder or other interesting fish in that area?

Thanks in advance.

What kind of fish are you targeting?

At this point, whatever I can catch the most of. I usually have my children along, so volume is important to keep them interested.

It'd be great to hook into something bigger or that looks more ocean-going (like a spanish mackeral), but I'd be happy just to increase the number of fish we are catching.

If your on a trailer you should try going out of Buzzy's on St. Jerome's Creek. Mike has always told me where to fish and with what. My fishin buddies are 4 & 6 so I know what you mean about keeping the fish coming.

DRIFT with croaker/spot/perch I find the depth varies from day to day I like to start at one end of a fishing ground and drift across then either drift again or anchor where I cuaght the biguns. But for the most part i just keep drifting over the better areas. Get some squid as well some days they like the squid better and if you run out of worms you always have squid left. I use a double hook bottom rig with the least amount of weight I can just to keep it dragging on the bottom 1-2oz. I also never go deeper the 25-30 feet I seem to catch more fish around 18-19 foot. every now and then you may get a nice weakfish or striper. I also bring on peeler crab with me 1/4 it, hook through the knuckle on a nice size hook cast it way out into the current and lef it drift in the current with no weight. You may only get one or two bites a day on that one but you will enjoy what ever bit it. Big croaker, fluke, rays, drum....

If you want to keep the kids busy, find yourself a cove with some nice grassy edges and get up in the shallows and cast into the weeds. You'll nail a perch every cast. I can do this over in Magothy Narrows behind Gibson Island. If you use a small beatle spin, you'll catch enough perch to put the kids asleep.

Chris - go on over to Tidalfish.com and read the reports out of Solomons. That will give you tons of tips. There are lots of different fish being caught - including flounder, striper, blues and macs. Each species takes a little different technique.

You may even get bit by the light tacke jigging bug. We hardly ever use real bait anymore. All metal and plastic lures for striper and blues.

I definitely agree with Chuck, you want to be drifting when bottom rigged for croaker or spot. Same for perch.

Chis I have fished this area for about 30 years. If you are putting in at the boat ramp make aleft and go up into the Pax river. As you go up the river hug the east shore as soon as you pass the Naval camp ground pier sxtart looking at your dept finder. When you are in about 15 feet of water start a drift with a double bottom rig. Use squid ,blodd worms, or peeler crab. Also if you go in the day time you are not going to be as productive as night fishing . the croaker and spot fishing are very hot at night right out in front of the entrance to the bay from the Pax. If you have a trailer for your boat and want take a ride up Rt 4 to the chesapeake Beach boat Ramp you can go over to Sharps Island light at night use blood worms and squid my wife and kids we crushed them in 30 ft of water big spot and huge croaker. Good Luck.

what is a good way to catch some bigger fish than spot or white perch? I went up to the bay bridge and drifted with blood worms and got about 30 perch and spot. The perch were big but the spot were no bigger than 4 inches. I cant troll because my boat doesnt even have rod holders lol. So what is a good way to catch bigger fish in the bay? what rigs/lures and where. By the way i come from the south river.

Hi Poe - We are on the South River also.

The best source for fishing information is Tidalfish.com. You'll find tons of suggestions and fishing reports.

The fishing should be heating up right outside the South River soon. The area just north of Thomas Point Light and the area just south of the Severn hold nice schools of striper this time of year. Look for the channel edges and the rips along Thomas and Tolly points. Or just look for flocks of birds diving and circling over the water.

We use metal lures - our best producer is 2-oz shorty Stingsilvers in gold, silver or pink. Plastics work well too as long as the bluefish aren't around. Bass Assassin lures or Bass Kandy Delights (BKD) in 5" or 7" sizes. Glitter green or purplish coplors do well. Topwater lures come in handy for the breaking fish this time of year.

For the lures just jig them off the bottom or cast and retrieve. There will be pelnty of advice on Tidalfish on how to do this. There are even articles about fishing methods and lcoations.

hey what marina do you come out of? And by the way thanks i guess ill have to spend some time out there and look for schools? You mean between thomas point and the bay bridge right? I have some bass pro spinning reels on bass pro rods right now, what would be a good reel rod combo to cast with that could handle more and i could maybe use as i progress and get a boat that i can troll with?
