Somebody please for gods sake tell me what you can do to either kill, trap or repel these flies found in the chesapeake/MD/ NJ area. I have just completed a trip from st. michaels maryland to massachusetts and can tell you that i killed upwards of 3000 of these small horsefly like flies over the course of the trip. Is there any local remedy or trap or something that will help me next time i make the trip? These babies drove me nearly insane. Thanks for ANY input or remedies.
I honest to god can't believe how bad the black flies were this past week. I brought a 40' sailboat up the coast from Maryland thru the chesapeake and C&D and to cape may then offshore up to cape cod. The worst was offshore- about ten miles offshore we were swarmed by no less than 5000 of these babies off the jersey coast. I wore out the fly swatter to the point it was shredded. One of those real metal mesh military jobbies too. It had worked great all the way thru the chesapeake when there were only 100's of flies. After fashioning a few new swatters out of some sheet plastic and misc stainless rods on the boat the slaughter began. After donning deep woods off (which didnt help at ALL) i went up on the bow and swatted until almost every last fly was dead ( i couldnt get the ones that were hanging on the stays and up the mast or under the inflatable on davits. I was swatting for, without exaggeration, 6-8 hours.
I feel for all you chesapeake and jersey coast guys. I almost lost my mind over these damn flies. I guess next time ill try a bug suit. The whole time i was cussing and swatting i was thinking there had to be some local remedy or trap you could get or build but i have still found nothing yet- Maybe the dryer sheet thing would work, who knows. Anything is worth a shot when they are eating you alive.
THere is something advertised around the Northern Neck that people are swearing by. Some kind of a strip that you attach to the back of your hat. I have never tried it because it reminds me of those sticky strips the dairy farmers use to hang in their barns and the entry ways to their houses that the flies would stick to. People say these hat strips work though. Me, I am hard corps, I just jump all over the place and swat at them. I fell off my dock doing this last summer.
