Default Eel for trout line bait

Can someone tell me how to use eel on a trout line? We've been using chicken necks and we were told you can use eel for the whole summer without rebaiting the line.

You can use salted eel, but I doubt it will last all summer. Cut it in 3" pieces tye it the same as the necks, and salt it down after each use. It will last longer and won't be as "fowl" when it goes bad as the necks. The big draw back is the price.

FYI: Trot Line, NOT trout line. Anyway, we got about 6 or 7 uses out of our trot line baited with salted eel. Stinky nasty stuff but works better then chicken. Tie a slip knot every 3 feet on your line and insert a 4 inch strip of the ell.

If the crab are running I doubt that the eel will last as long as the necks. I'd salt whatever I was using.
Used to use bull lip, and it lasted a very long time.

I fish for perch (to freeeze and use for bait and chum) at my slip when the weather isn't so nice, and often catch eels. One of the trot line kids on the dock takes 'em off my hooks and uses them. Frozen clam snouts (necks) for bait. Also catch a few small (8 - 12") rockfish at the same time. Yes, I return them to the water. At least it's fishin', and it don't burn no petrol.

If you want them for free, go down to a creek for a few hours during the evening and put some cat food in a miinow trap or eel trap and you will have enough to line for a day.
