Re: Offshore fishing out of Indian River Inlet - New guy looking for some pointers A good place to start would be the hambone, elephant trunk, DE Lightship or jackspot, But right now there are not a lot of fish being caught and I think that is due to that people are over-running the fish. About 12 mile out, 120-150 degrees out of IRI there was a spot where the bottom depth went from 61' to 77'. Right on the depth change there were bait balls raining on the surface and there were bluefin schools all around. The fog was bad last weekend so we did not stop because there were a good amount of boats running in around 4(trolling would have been dangerous and we probably would have been cut off from other boats not being able to see our spread). The water temp was 74.5 degrees at this spot and that could also be why the tuna are in closer since the water was 80 degrees out at the dog. Right now I heard there were more fish being caught on the chunk rather than the troll with lots of mahi's around. If you are going to troll, ballyhoos have been the ticket for most guys and almost all the big tuna were caught on ballyhoos either naked or with a blue/white illander. Best advice is to get to now the local charters/tackleshop guys. Also the commercial guys can be your friend too and a valuable source since there out in these areas often.
Good Luck. |
