Default Offshore fishing out of Indian River Inlet - New guy looking for some pointers

Hello everyone. We just purchased a 28' formula sunsport and we're looking to do some offshore fishing (not really a fishing boat but seems to handle the water well so we're going to try to get out). We have been hitting B buoy for a few weeks and have had moderate success, lots of sea bass and flounder but I'm itching to get out further. We have GPS and 12' rodholder outriggers. We would like to try trolling 4 to 5 rods. Can anybody recommend a place suitable for our first trip out? Also, I am looking to gather together GPS coordinates for the popular fishing locations offshore in this area; is there a place I can find them online or do I need to purchase a chart? Any pointers or anything at all that may be of help please feel free to comment! Thanks in advance!

Here are a few local IR and DE Bay fishing forums.

http://www.saltfish.net/cgi-bin/disc....cgi?pg=topics

http://delmarvafishing.proboards2.com/index.cgi

I would recommend getting a Chart and the DE Reef Guide.

http://www.dnrec.state.de.us/fw/artrf.htm

I fish primarily out of IR, to B then A, down to the Lightship/weatherstation (44009) to Masseys Canyon.

The fishing is endless so join the other forums.

Good Luck.

I'm username "Bad Kitty" on those forums. (Glacier Bay 2640 w/150HPDI's)

You should at least have a chart plotter with the offshore chip. Will make finding the Hambone, Hotdog, Fingers, Massey's, Trunk , etc. a lot easier.

ddigler,

Go to your local tackle store and get the offshore chart for our area. On the chart you will see spots like Hot Dog, Hambone, chicken bone, elephant trunk etc as well as the coordinates and heading from and to IR inlet.

A good place to start would be the hambone, elephant trunk, DE Lightship or jackspot, But right now there are not a lot of fish being caught and I think that is due to that people are over-running the fish. About 12 mile out, 120-150 degrees out of IRI there was a spot where the bottom depth went from 61' to 77'. Right on the depth change there were bait balls raining on the surface and there were bluefin schools all around. The fog was bad last weekend so we did not stop because there were a good amount of boats running in around 4(trolling would have been dangerous and we probably would have been cut off from other boats not being able to see our spread). The water temp was 74.5 degrees at this spot and that could also be why the tuna are in closer since the water was 80 degrees out at the dog. Right now I heard there were more fish being caught on the chunk rather than the troll with lots of mahi's around. If you are going to troll, ballyhoos have been the ticket for most guys and almost all the big tuna were caught on ballyhoos either naked or with a blue/white illander. Best advice is to get to now the local charters/tackleshop guys. Also the commercial guys can be your friend too and a valuable source since there out in these areas often.
Good Luck.
