Default Fishing The Lower Bay 2017

FinnedFanatic's 2017 Reports and Such

Well, 2016 was a blast... I learned a lot of new techniques and finally "understand" the lower bay fishery to some extent. 2015 was humbling, 2016 was inspiring. Hopefully 2017 will be downright awesome fishing and fun.

Through this message board I have been able to connect with some awesome anglers, many of which have became great friends and mentors. I hope 2017 is just as enlightening and is as or more memorable then last.

MAY THE FISHING BANTER FOR 2017 BEGIN!!!

Feel free to comment, ask questions, share experiences and just follow along as I record my successes and failures fishing the Lower Chesapeake Bay this year. I'm sure I'll see some of you out on the water.

Me and a buddy trolled Cape Henry looking for a lost striper... and reminiscing about how in the past on Jan 1, there would be hundreds of boats trolling. Yesterday, there were 4... and no fish, but a pretty day on the water.

It sucks how bad the ocean bite has become. I wish they would extend the bay season into January since the fish obviously don't have a friggin calendar or GPS.

I am going to focus on freshwater until the weather warms I think. The Pamunkey and Mattaponi are high on my list of waters to explore in January and February.

Man you have to run all the way to the CLT now for a decent bluefish?

At this point I'm just hoping to get the boat back before the Tog season closes...

@bendem, absolutely. I'll be in touch soon.

@Spruill242, Yeah man. I sure hope I can keep my rig at Little Creek again this summer. I enjoyed being there this past summer. Any more talk of closing the place down going around? Any word on your boats bill of health?? I'd love to get on some TOG too!

Nope, I haven't heard a word one way or the other.

They took a vacation for the holiday. So they'll get back on it the 5th. Blew a fuse for the oil injection system so they just have to track down WHY it blew the fuse. Fingers crossed....

Thinking about fishing out of my dad's house in VB next weekend. I know the keeper season for the lower bay ended 12/31. But catch and release is still allowed, correct? At what water temps are the stripers usually gone from the lower bay and tributaries all together? His boat is too small for cape henry and beyond...

Even prior to weather we are having, fishing was poor mostly Nada for Rockfish. quick drop and then rise in temp, Rains coming prior to your arrival.. Who the heck knows.. If looking for something to do, I say go for it! We need reports!
---sorry man, just have no idea.

ok well we'll see how things go. but if it does end up being 60 degrees next weekend as forecast might as well head out and give it a go. i'll let you know if i have any luck. due to winds, will probably be stuck in the narrows/broad bay area.

Your welcome to come down and fish with me sometime! I'm free about every Monday and can make Sundays and Tuesdays work with notice.

I had a group of VB boys join me down on the James this past weekend. They managed to catch all the fish. I only got this one 35" skinny one. Lots of great fishing around Richmond in the winter.

So I got a call from the shop yesterday. Seems like the fuse for the oil injection system decided it had put more than enough time in and called it quits. Could not get the engine to blow the fuse again. So a new fuse and a clean bill of health.

Pretty happy with that.

Maybe I'll take the wife out to see some of the whales we've had off the beach lately.....
