Default What to expect opening day - Trophy season

Just wanted to know what to expect on the water opening day, April 19th on the bay. I have always graciously spent $$$ on a charter near opening season to support the fleet and then fished on my own vessel a few weeks after til November.

I was planning on the main bay as it leads into the Eastern bay - trolling. I am worried I'll be overrun by the Deale or other fleets and I truly don't want to be a hassle to them. Just 3 people looking for 3 fish.

Would I be better off further north/south to stay more "rural" from other boats or will the whole bay be a disaster?

Thanks as always.

Chris

Chris - I crew on a friend's 23 CC opening day most every year. #cold and wet. The congestion is not as bad as everyone says, however, the fish tend to scatter and go deep from the boat traffic. You're odds are better elsewhere that day, away from the fleet. We've had snotty weather the last few years and that also has a bearing on our float plan. We don't run nearly as far when the seas are building. We're in the Boatyard Tourney and do strictly Catch and Release. The bite has been slow early and then picked up later in the afternoon. My theory is that feeding times are also affected by the fish being spooked.

We wear auto-inflate CO2 life-vests. There have been quite a few capsizes and drownings on opening day.

This was last year: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/201...at-nrp-anglers

The past two Winters were extremely mild. Expect water temps to be lower this Spring.

I think it's a little early to guess what the spring season will hold, but I'll be sure to have crew enough to get a decent spread out.

As far as jug fishing... After you get your crew together, just call Touch Too Much. Not cheap, but you burn less fuel. Don't forget the green bananas...
Or so I've heard.

I'm taking my wife's second graders, 8 per trip and after 4 trips, we go to the bottom of the order and back thru the rotation. All the cookies and ice cream they can eat.

Opening day can get crowded. especially in the popular areas, but its not as crowded as the day of the MSSA tournament. the worse part of opening day is the crowded boat ramps

This, along with whitecapping 3-4 footers.
In the rare occurence it is calm there will be approx 200 boats crammed into every square mile trolling across each others lines, then getting into cussing matches about it on channel 68, while the big boats force the small boats up onto the shoals because they own the water and refuse to show any consideration by slightly altering their course.
The fish dive deep about an hour after first light, and generally come back up to feed in the afternoon after most of the yahoos are back at the ramp.
Other than that, it's a blast!

Oh, and I almost forgot......if you decide to actually keep a fish, or pull it up out of the water for a pic, don't post it online or the holier than thou cath & release jiggers will verbally scald you for removing a fish that could have laid millions of eggs after you had mortally exhausted it from an hour long fight on light tackle.

Where I fish it's not so bad, but I'm not telling you where that is, or it will be crazy.

Sandy Point ramps must be a zoo. My friend has a nice slip near Annapolis so there is no hassle getting in or out. We're not fishing the Boatyard TX this year on his boat because he has a wedding that weekend. It's worth it for the after-party.

If i wasn't fishing opening day, I always thought it would be fun to go to the Sandy Point Ramp. I would take a cooler of beer, a bucket of fried chicken, and some lawn chairs to watch the antics. And do this:
