Default Two more Dead..... went out of Oyster

I heard through the grapevine they found the bodies yesterday.

So sad and stupid, stupid, stupid mistakes made by two 43 year old guys just trying to have a good time. They didn't understand the waters they were going out into and the limits of their boat...... There were small craft warnings that day..... the wind was from the SW which gave the appearance of calm waters as they would have stood at the dock at Oyster. That day I went down to Willis Wharf to take a look...... I didn't like what I saw and decided there would be no point in going out..... in my 25ft boat that would have been safe I knew it would be choppy and awful once leaving the dock and heading east.

Missing fishermen's boat found capsized off Eastern Shore

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) -- The Coast Guard called off its search Tuesday evening for two fishermen missing since Sunday.

Earlier in the day, a 12-foot boat was found capsized some six miles east of Wachapreague Inlet, Petty Officer Larry Chambers said. The boat was found 23 miles from the spot on the barrier islands where the two Virginia Beach men had planned to go fishing, he said.

The search for Charles Driver and Cameron Deuso, both 43, began Monday after Driver's girlfriend reported them missing. The two men left Oyster about noon Sunday in Driver's boat.

The search was called off around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Driver and Deuso families during this difficult time," said Lt. Comdr. Rich Condit, the commanding officer of Coast Guard Group Hampton Roads and director of the search. "They should know that we have done everything in our power to try and find their loved ones."

Coast Guard and Virginia Marine Resource Commission rescuers searched nearly 4,000 square miles before calling off the search, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

In addition to the boat, crews also found several pieces of debris, including two lifejackets, a cooler and a shoe that apparently belonged the one of the men, the Coast Guard said.

The water temperature was 51 degrees, Chambers said.

Who in their right mind would take a 12' #@!#@$ boat out of Wachapreague Inlet to begin with!!?? Although very sad, this accident, like the one with the football player in Jupiter could have been avoided!

A couple of years ago I was fishing out of Oyster on a windy day. The wind got up and the water started getting rough when I noticed a small Carolina Skiff heading out. When the wind continued and whitecaps started forming we headed back in. As we were stowing our gear an incoming 25 ft'er went by towing the upside-down Carolina Skiff with two very wet guys back towards the dock. A man's got to know his limitations - as well as the limitations of his equipment.

Kevin,

Don't you mean 12' boat + small craft warning = stay home or go to bar instead ?

I fish out of and around Oyster all the time. As tragic as that story is I guess I'll have to keep a sharp eye out for those that are sure to follow in their wake. ( No pun intended ). We used to fish from our 14' Carolina Skiff out of there, (never outside the islands) until we had a 6' sand shark come up behind the boat one day with one of my kids catch (a croaker) in its mouth. Straight out of "Jaws" my daughter pointed and said "Daddy we need a bigger boat". The shark was less then 3 ft. away and not much freeboard between us. Thats when the Admiral gave the go-ahead for the Sea Hunt. Back to the story though, keeping my eyes peeled for those that don't heed the laws of Mother Nature. when will they learn? Hopefully soon. Our prayers go out to their families.
