Check out www.tidal fish.com. It is the local fishing board. Also Here is link to a map with some hot spots of the upper bay.

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries...hesapeake.html

The fall is fun. There are many breaking fish to chase with light tackle. Many will also troll for the trophies, especially later in the fall. Others will continue summer tactics of chumming.

twofish,
See if you can find the Rich Novotny book @ a local tackle shop. Its called"Catchin' Chesapeake Rockfish" and it covers most of Bay basics with some great overall info which can be applied bay wide.

Even better join the MSSA - Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermens Association - check them out at www.mssa.net. They have chapters all over the state. We have one in Frederick that is very active. check us out at www.mssafrederick.com.

Rich is our executive director and you can learn a lot at the chapter meetings.

Call the MSSA office at 410-255-5535 and Sherri should be able to help you. Rich has been out due to a surgery.

Fishcop been there and done that . Know your facts before making stupid comments. Plus they are out in force against the menhadden fleet in Reedville which will have more of an impact since they are not only a food source but also a filter feeder for the bay.

Hate to tell you this but I happen to know my facts better than most. I went to college and majored in fisheries biology. After college I worked for the Maryland DNR before I became a police officer. As far as the menhaden fleet is concerned; you are absolutley right that they need to be delt with. But guess what..........weve said that for years. Five years ago when we were catching sick fish, it was determined that the fish were showing lesions as a result of a bacterial infection and all the sick fish had one thing in common. Low fat stores or in laymans terms they were all malnurished and stressed. So what did your MSSA do. I'll answer for you.........not much. Lots of organizations are involved in the pressure thats being put on the reduction fleet but unfortunately nothing will be done because the board that makes decisions is made up of commercial fishing interests. So I ask again, why no pressure for game fish satus, why no pressure for a net ban, why no real effort in conservation. The MSSA has become more concerned with running tournaments. If we all got together as fisherman we could get so much accomplished. Look at what the net ban and gamefish status has done for several florida fisheries. I think its sad that the striped bass is recieving this status in other states and its even being proposed federally for their waters, but in Maryland where the largest majority of east coast stipers spawn(70%) we not only consider this measure we allow, gill nets, pound nets, purse seins, ect. So I say again...........they don't care.

Typical person that throws stones at others and has nothing good to say or do. Yes they run tournaments and that's the main source of revenue to keep the organization running. They do much good with kids fishing, scholarships etc. Just because they do not do something or support something that means a lot to you, you feel they are worthless. Guess what the only organization that does everything you want is your own that you created with one member. Get involved and take the lead on it and see what happens, do just make sarcastic comments.

Well obviously your a member who probably attends meetings and feels their doing something special. Sorry to point out the simple facts. I too sign up every year and fish in tournaments so I'm just as guilty as you are. The difference is I know what I'm involved in and not under the impression that its something more. You are absolutely right they (MSSA) do some good things as do lots of other conservation organizations and I credit them for their work with kids. Hell, I take more less privledged kids fishing free of charge than most people you'll ever meet. However, that still dosen't avoid the fact of whats going on with fisheries management in our state. If you want to attend meeteings and talk about tournaments, civic duties, or charities thats fine. I'm worried about the bay and the lack of pressure we as sports fishermen put on our legislators to correct whats going on, and if the CCA, MSSA, RFA, or any other organizations are pushing their own agendas and not addressing the true concern( THE RESOURCE WE ALL RELY ON) Then were all guilty for sitting around not taking a stand. Nothing sartcastic just facts. By the way If you'd like to get together next summer maybe we could both take some kids fishing. Also the stripers are really picking up down south several 40lb fish were caught this weekend and my buddy has been limiting out on trips for big fish for the last week. Maybe I'll see you on the water.

I agree that more can be done. I can make peace with you and think it's great what you do with the kids. We are looking into something for our chapter in Frederick. Any ideas or places to start let us know. Where are you located, boat type, etc?

Do a search on Tidal Fish for "Menhaden Matters". Lots of info (as well as the normal b!tching) about the subject.
Get involved and become part of the solution.

I live on the eastern shore just over the Narrows Bridge in grasonville. I went this year without a boat, my Pro-line fell apart and I sold it in the spring after the new hull was put on it, but I'm in the process of getting all my financing together for a 23 palmetto custom which I hope to order in the next month. I believe I saw your boat down around the solomons area this spring during the mssa tournament. I was fishing in a grady at the time. If it wasnt you then it was another yellow hydra sports. My e-mailis on here so feel free to chat anytime. I'm leaving for Florida to go fishing thursday and next week I'll be in Mexico, and Jamica. But I'll be back the following week and I'll be fishing on the lower bay until the big fish leave. Hopefully they will stay around longer than last year. I don't know if you have ever fished the bay bridge tunnel area and watched those menhaden boats in action, but I truly believe if that fishery was curtailed it would make a huge difference.

I believe you are 100% correct. I use to live and fish the Chesapeake in the Annapolis area. I now live and fish the inshore and near shore area of Stuart, Florida. If the net ban and game status ever went to the voters in Maryland, and the average citizen realized the profiting of so few at the expense of so many, I believe they would do the same thing they did in Florida. Ban the gill nets, and give gamefish status to Stripers.

The mullet run is still in full swing down here on the Indian River. Ten to fifteen years ago, the numbers of mullet was about equal to the numbers of netters that would net the last egg bearing fish and not give it a second thought. Today, the mullet run is something to behold, acres of beautiful finger mullet being pursued by Tarpon, Jacks, Trout and Snook. I truly hope that the Maryland voters will wake up and realize it isn't like the "old days" when commercial fishing for Stripers was the avenue for most consumers. Most people will make the right decision if they have the correct information. Sadly, the information that most of them have is from the commercial interests that are blinded by their own concerns. I hope that not only the MSSA but the CBF, Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, will make educating the voters a top priority. Best of luck.

Last couple time we went out we were rewarded with limits of stripers from 32-42 inches. However had to really work for the fish. I have been told of huge schools of fish farther south with gannets and pelicans working the fish.
