This report is a bit late (rehab from surgery makes typing difficult with one hand), but here are some photos from our long weekend fishing the area of Cherrystone campground near Cape Charles, Va.
Because I couldn't fish, I did left-handed camera duty...
The bite was definately on in the area... Here is some pullage from the first day!
Logan outfished everyone on the lightest tackle of anyone.
The smile tells it all...
...and its a keeper!
Bro-in-law Dan helps my Admiral bring in the first fish that she had ever caught on her new LT combo...
Everywhere we went, from "The Cell" to the CBBT (and all points in-between), we landed a bunch of these fat croaker...
The croaker were the most numerous species that we caught, but we did well with flounder... and every once in awhile we'd lay into a school of fiesty blues.
We caught quite a few of these little fighters as well.
Because this was a family outing, the weapon of choice was light tackle rigged wtih white and chart 1/4 to 1/2 oz "spec rigs" found at the Cherrystone Bait and Tackle store.
Bait used was a combination of cut bait and squid, and made for a lively time with hundreds of C&R's during the weekend.
A great time was had by all!

That is a great area...I used to go there with my brothers and a bunch of friends every Memorial Day weekend,
Cherrystone is a great campground...We used to have a couple pop ups....Great time was had by all..
We used to catch Sea trout in the 60 foot trench just off of the concrete ships by the hundreds...Unbelievable fishing....Nice flounder by the way....
You are a trooper Kevin. First you run your boat down to Deale in a tough Chesapeake Chop after your surgery and now you are out fishing..... All I can say is STRONG
Number 3, I am planning on coming in the last weekend in July for some croakers, while that be too late? I have heard they are running a little early this year.
HotSpot...
The recovery is progressing slowly. The incision is healing well, but the tendon repairs are not cooperating and are very inflamed and rehab is painful. Hopefully steroid treatments will fix that problem. In the mean time, i'm still in a removable cast and re-habbing the best I can. Can't fish, can't boat, so rehab is my life for now.
No word on the boat yet. It is still at Tri-State Marine in Deale awaiting repairs. As of Saturday, there were "2 boats ahead of me", so I'm trying to be patient.
The croakers should still be around by the time you get up here. And...! hopefully there will be some trayt by then as well!

Hey megabyte, we went to the Kiptopeke a few weeks ago and fished around the cement ships and in the james river and the croaker fishing was kinda slow I did catch a few flounders18 to 20 inches....When driving over the CBBT we saw hundreds of boats fishing around the bridge pillings and islands...Is that where we should have been fishing ?.....Also were you using a weight with the spec rigs or just tying them on without...thanks again...Hope fully will be going back up in August...are the croakers still there ???? Thanks again for your insight....

Honestly, the area of the concrete ships was the slowest area for us, and the CBBT bite was off that day as well. Our best luck was fishing the area around The Cell, and all of the lumps and dropoffs just south of there, just north of Cherrystone. Another area that was productive for us was the Cape Charles Channel, and the structure southwest of there at a spot called 'the anchor'. Look for structure and dropoffs and drift over them... don't anchor. Thats how we had our best luck. You'll nail the fish on the edges everytime.

We used the spec rigs both ways depending on the tide and the drift. If we were moving too fast, we'd add weight to get the baits down. If not, we didn't. I also rigged a fishfinder rig with a large circle hook which worked well (I'm partial to using circle hooks), but the spec rigs still outfished the fishfinder by about 3 to 1. Go figure.
Best bait by far was fresh cut croaker, but we also use fresh squid with some success.
We did hook up with some guys at the Cape Charles ramp who had been to Watchapregue and got skunked. They followed us to the Cape Charles Channel and bailed fish like we were doing. I think it made a believer out of them!

I have heard alot of people talking about THE CELL./...Did you have the numbers for that spot.???
I do not, but it is on the charts. Look due north of Cherrystone on the eastern shore side. My chart is on the boat, otherwise I'd be able to give you the lat/longs. If you ask in any of the area tackle shops, you can get GPS coordinates. The Cell is a well known spot.
Good luck and give us a report when you go!
