What range would I need to get to the stream off of Ocean City (OC)? I'm looking at several rigs to purchase and wondering if an Albemarle 248 will have the range (250-300) needed and reliability (single Volvo 5.0) to get me into some good water off OC.
Additionally, what is the distance and time that should be alloted to travel from Annapolis to OC via the water?
You can usually find some good water about 30-35 miles out of OC but if you looking to run to the canyons its 53 miles to Poormans. Earlier this summer the "good" water pushed into about 20 miles from the inlet, we were catching plenty of mahis and even had a friend go 1 for 3 on white marlins. A 24' Albemarle will give you the range you need to fish offshore out of OC. I run a 23' Grady White and feel comfortable chasing tuna and marlin when the weather permits.
Sorry but I can't be much help regarding the distance from Annapolis to OC via the water.
I have made the trip from Annapolis to Indian River Inlet a couple times. It is 126 NM door to door. (via the C&D Canal) You will have to add about another 15-20 miles to get to OC Inlet. I usually figure 5-6 hours based upon weather. I have made it as quickly as 4.5 hours. It could take a lot longer too. It all depends upon the conditions.
Stonewall, in your opinion, would I be better off getting a larger boat that is not trailerable and using it occasionally to go offshore via the 5-6hr trip from Annapolis (where I would keep the boat) or should I get a trailerable, offshore capable boat, that I could trailer from Annapolis to OC to do some bluewater fishing. I realize there are preferences and many variables...just looking for some opinions on what you or others may do. I do offshore now and I'm not sure the Bay will answer all of my fishing "needs"......Thank you in advance Stonewall.
Many of us do exactly what your planning. I keep my boat on the West River and trailer it to OC to fish offshore several times during the year. I started off with the intention that I would run it via water to OC. Long trip if you plan on going back and forth and slips for short term are expensive and hard to find. The trailer gives me the flexibilty of going back and forth often and storage on the trailer is reasonanble. When the bite is really good, I will leave the boat in OC which makes it easy to get over there to fish since the boat is already there. You can also save a considerable amount of money on fuel if you trailer into one of the gas stations near the public ramp in West OC.

You would be killed by fuel costs for the run from ANP to OC.
Not to mention it would totally eat up one of your play days, two if returning the same route.
I had to make the same choice and elected to have a non-trailer-able boat at Solomons.
But if you want to go offshore, keep it on a trailer and haul it to and fro.
The Royal Farms station on Golf Course Rd usually has good fuel prices, diesel too.
It's at the last light before the Rt 50 bridge into OC.
After fuel, head toward the harbor and Bev at Harbor Tackle usually has good fresh bait.

Hey Islandfish, I'm a new member of THT, live in Riva, MD and a year and a half behind you on the buy bigger and sail it or haul smaller question...just got a (private marina) slip off the South River not a quarter mile from my front door after a 5 year wait, but don't think the Bay will totally satisfy my fishing appetite...how did you make out afterall?
I live in Frederick and have a 27 Albemarle. I trailer it to OC and leave it there for the summer. I get bored, cant stand, fishing on the bay and make the drive to chase tuna and whatever else will fight back!

I've been trailering from Annapolis to OC, Chincoteague and Wachapreague for years. If your looking to do offshore trips from Edgewater to OC figure on a long Marathon type trip..Example: We usually pull out of the driveway not later then 2am trailer boat to OC (2 1/2hrs), fuel up Royal Farms while boat is getting fuel you get food and lots of it, fill boxes with ice..Then pull down street, launch boat, another 2hrs? to Poormans or Balt Canyon...Fish all day pull up around 3pm run back in and usually arrive home 8-9pm depending on traffic...The key is preparation having most of the gear on the boat and having it hooked up to your tow vehicle the night before. I try to get some sleep early before getting up at 1:30am...I use to do 7-8 trips a year, I do 3-4 trips a year now...I would not leave my boat in OC, I prefer to keep it at home so I know all systems are good to go. Its also free to store it in my driveway...We also caught 30+ Rockfish yesterday in the bay chasing the schools, can't do that if the boat is in OC...The Albie 248 will have the range, I don't know anything about the Volvo...I'm planning my next marathon offshore trip Aug 5th....
Homey, Thank you for laying out your logistics. It sounds like procedures and a timeline I could mirror with a little practice. Marathon sounds like an accurate description...but I know it is worth every minute of lost sleep. Thanks again for sharing!

Be very cautious about leaving gear in the boat overnight, even just until 2 am.
There are a few nefarious characters lurking about.
Not saying it would happen to you, but it has to others.
