Default Relo to Richmond/Norfolk

I have an oppportunity to relocate to Richmond for work. Wifey will work in Hampton Rds area. What is the best place to live and involve boating/fishing lifestyle? I looked at West Pt, Yorktown etc. Can I get some ideas. Small town living is perfectly OK.

King and Queen County. Pretty much 1/2 way between Rich and Williamsburg. Small very rural. Great boating on the Mattaponi and the York River.

For fishing, best bet is Hampton but that is a hike to Rich. Do you trailer?

I have been through this very thing, lived in Rich., lived in NN, lived in King and Queen. Just moved back to King and Queen

West Point would be a good solution. A little closer to Richmond than Hampton Roads, but basically in the middle between those two. Good area for power boating and fishing. If you are into sailing at all, the best place close to Richmond is Fishing Bay.

You might look into New Kent Co. - east of Richmond. Small town type atmosphere with lots of housing opportunities and growing little by little. Closer to Richmond than Hampton.

Tappahannock (Essex Co.) may be another alternative - ON the Rappahannock River (brackish) and 40mi. or so from Richmond - maybe a few more from Hampton. Most everything you'd need there.

Also, have you thought of the Williamsburg area? Lots of new stuff down there - shopping, restaurants, hospital, etc.. If you look around, you can probably find something reasonable - maybe on the outskirts. Not far from Yorktown, Jamestown, Hampton Roads area and about 45min. to Richmond area.

Which part of Richmond will you be commuting to - Northside, Southside, West end? Can make a big difference in your commute time from east of here.

Will your wife be working on the Hampton side or the Norfolk side of the James? Some folks refer to "Hampton Roads" as ALL of that area. Traffic in the Hampton, Newport News area can be a BEAR - ANY time of day!

I was born and raised here - shoot me a PM if I can offer help.

Nice state to live in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Regards,

I live in RIchmond and my dock is in Gloucester, just across the bridge from Yorktown and Williamsburg. Takes me 1 hr 15 min door to door. I grew up in Hpt Rds. Traffic to Norfolk will end up being your main consideration, especially Memorial Day to Labor Day because of the tunnel. Like the other guys can tell you, traffic during the summer ( beach traffic ) is a killer. Business commuters will have a tough time with the Hpt Rds Bridge tunnel, but it can be done - I did it for two years.
Williamsburg is smack in the middle - about 45 minutes to downtown richmond and 40/45 minutes to Downtown Norfolk, with no traffic.
There are plenty of people that live in Hampton and commute to Richmond, but thats a heck of a drive and tough on the ol' car.
Either way, you'll love it and wont want to leave. Play the lottery and you'll both end up on a boat with a cocktail watching the traffic jams on the HRBT.

I moved up to the area about 3 months ago and I live in Williamsburg and drive to Richmond almost everyday. It takes me about 40min to get downtown Richmond. Easy drive. I have to make trips to Norfolk from Williamsburg from time to time and I will tell you that traffic SUCKS!

I relocated to the Richmond area a year ago from Boston. I had specific requirements to the location I wanted to live. 5-10 miles to a boat ramp on the James, 5 -10 miles to the airport (I travel a fair amount) and 5 - 10 miles to Downtown (work). That put me down the Osborn Turnpike about 6 miles from the city. Very rural area, but everything is close. So far I love living here. I am on the hunt for a 40' Tiara express that will probably live in Deltaville.

Send me an email if you want lowdown on various areas around Richmond.
