ROFFER'S OCEAN FISHING FORECASTING SERVICE, INC.
TOLL FREE 800 677-7633 & (305) 262-8336 // 24 HR FAX 305 (265-9077) ROFFS FISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS FOR THE HUDSON CANYON TO THE BALTIMORE CANYON OFFSHORE UPDATED ON TUES. 11 MAY 04 FOR TUES P.M. & WED. FISHING ONLY Based on a multiple factor analysis, the symbols (hot spot dots) mark the areas where bait concentrations are expected and where fishing action is expected to be better compared with other (non-marked) areas. These are not based on dock rumors or hearsay fishing reports. Fishing reports are stated as such. You should start fishing where you recognize other signs of good fishing conditions near these marked areas. It is very important to use your sea surface temperature (sst°) gauge to locate the boundaries of the water masses, which are outlined. Rather than trying to find water based on the absolute temperature values shown on the map, search for the relative change in sst where the water mass boundaries occur. Arrows indicate the main current direction. Numbers inside of the dots indicate the number of consecutive days that we have seen favorable conditions in that location.
Chlorophyll/color boundaries are indicated with dotted lines and SST boundaries with solid lines.
As a rough guide here are some chlorophyll values that will help you interpret the values seen on our analyses: Bahamas Dark blue water = 0.08 mg/m3, Gulf Stream water = 0.10 mg/m3; Blended blue or "northeast U.S. blue" water = 0.2 -
0.25 mg/m3; Water at the mouth of many rivers and bays = 1.5 - 2.0 mg/m3 .
WAKE UP IT IS TIME TO GET READY FOR AN EARLY TUNA AND MARLIN SEASON! Please feel free to copy this analysis (this time only) and send to your friends and fishing pals. There is an eddy over 1300 fathom depths of Carteret Canyon that since Friday has pulled a substantial filament of dark blue (from the ocean color satellites), 67.6°F (early morning, 1°-2°F warmer in the
afternoon) Gulf Stream water into the Baltimore
Canyon (100 fathom curve) and Wilmington Canyon (1000 fathoms) area. By the end of this week we expect that some of this water will be over the 500 fathom depths of Spencer, Lindenkohl, Carteret and Toms Canyon. This provides an early season opportunity to catch tuna, dolphin and marlin as this water comes almost directly from the Gulf Stream. Fishing action with marlin, tuna and dolphin has been happening off North Carolina for a few weeks.
Good chances for action occur today and tomorrow over the southwest wall of the Baltimore Canyon from 73°50'W & 38°05'N (26675 & 42220) to the northern side of the Poor Mans Canyon near 74°00'W & 37°55'N (26710 & 42110). Additional chances for action occur over the 1000 fathom depths of the Wilmington Canyon
